Essential Duties and Responsibilities :
The Lead Carpenter ensures the successful execution of construction projects through high-quality carpentry work, effective crew leadership, and meticulous project management. This role requires proactive scheduling, material management, and documentation to maintain accountability and foster clear communication with management and clients. Additionally, the Lead Carpenter is responsible for mentoring apprentices, coordinating with subcontractors, and ensuring compliance with inspections and safety standards.
1. Carpentry and Project Execution :
- Perform advanced carpentry tasks, including framing, finishing, cabinetry, and custom builds.
- Interpret and implement blueprints, plans, and construction drawings to meet project specifications.
- Troubleshoot and resolve on-site construction challenges.
- Ensure all work meets quality standards and adheres to project timelines.
2. Scheduling and Material Management :
Review the project schedule daily and provide updates to the Project Manager, noting whether the project is ahead or behind schedule.Monitor on-site materials, maintaining an ongoing list of needs for timely orders from vendors and suppliers.Avoid unnecessary trips to local stores by proactively planning and ordering materials in advance.Coordinate with the Project Manager to schedule subcontractors and ensure they adhere to the project timeline.3. Inspection Coordination :
Schedule and coordinate required inspections with governing municipalities.Address any issues identified during inspections and ensure compliance with local codes.4. Daily Log and Documentation :
Record a detailed daily log for the project, including :Staff and subcontractors on-site.
Details of production completed (e.g., quantity, square footage, or type of work completed).Notes on work progress to ensure accountability and facilitate discussions with clients.Take 3-5 usable photos each day that correspond to the daily log details, visually documenting production for management and client reference.5. Crew Leadership and Management :
Plan and assign daily tasks to crew members, ensuring efficient resource use.Supervise the crews work, providing clear instructions, feedback, and performance evaluations.Maintain a respectful and supportive team environment, promoting accountability and collaboration.Address interpersonal or performance issues in a constructive manner.6. Mentorship and Training :
Train and mentor apprentices and junior team members, sharing technical knowledge and best practices.Track the progress of apprentices and provide guidance to help them build their skills.Encourage continuous learning and professional growth within the team.7. Safety and Compliance :
Enforce safety regulations and ensure compliance with company standards and local building codes.Conduct regular safety checks and toolbox talks to promote safe practices.Proactively address potential hazards to ensure the safety of all team members.Skills and Competencies :
Technical Expertise : Skilled in all aspects of carpentry, including framing, finishing, and structural work.Leadership : Proven ability to lead, motivate, and manage a team effectively.Documentation : Strong organizational skills to maintain detailed logs and photo documentation.Problem Solving : Capable of resolving on-site challenges efficiently and creatively.Planning and Coordination : Ability to schedule tasks, manage materials, and coordinate with subcontractors and inspectors.Communication : Excellent verbal and written communication skills to interface with team members, management, and clients.Qualifications :
Minimum of 12 years of experience in carpentry, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.Proficient in reading and interpreting blueprints, technical drawings, and project plans.Familiarity with local building codes and inspection requirements.Experience with project documentation, including daily logs and photo records.Excellent interpersonal and mentoring skills.Performance Metrics :
Completion of projects on time, within budget, and to quality standards.Accuracy and completeness of daily logs and photo documentation.Effective crew management, with clear accountability for daily production.Team productivity and morale under leadership.Compliance with inspections, safety regulations, and building codes.Relationships :
