The Hangar Theatre is seeking Teaching Artists to add to its roster for the following programs in 2025.
Spring Break-a-Leg (Daytimes, M-F, April 14-18, 2025)
Next Gen School of Theatre (Daytimes, M-F, June 30-August 29, 2025)
POSITION: Teaching Artist
DEPARTMENT: Learning and Engagement
LOCATION: We are currently teaching in-person, in the greater Ithaca, NY area. We do not currently offer housing for this position.
FULL-TIME OR PART-TIME: Part-time/Contracted
IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Producing Artistic Director/Director of Education
COMPENSATION: We offer an hourly pay rate of $22 to $25 an hour for lead teachers, depending on the specific contract and level of experience.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Teaching Artists function in their role in a classroom during an artistic residency; or as a lead teacher during our Next Generation school break and summer classes. Teaching Artists should be comfortable leading a group of young people in improvisation games, movement and vocal exercises, and other theatre-related exercises as well as structuring a curriculum (of varying lengths) to fill classroom time in an engaging, creative, and fun way. We are also interested in teaching artists with special skills in musical theatre, dance, singing, visual arts, improvisation, movement, stage combat, clowning, and playwriting.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
- Leading improvisational theater games and exercises
- Assisting with lesson planning
- Teaching basic theatre concepts and awareness in an age-appropriate way
- Directing youth in writing and rehearsing original plays
QUALIFICATIONS/SKILL SETS
- Degree and/or equivalent experience in arts education, education, fine arts, and/or performing arts
- Experience working with young people at the elementary and/or secondary school level
- A commitment to the principles of equity, diversity, inclusion and access (EDIA)
- Cultural competence; the ability to interact effectively and thoughtfully with people across different cultures, backgrounds, and identities; and an understanding of the principles of antiracism and anti oppression.
