Location Requirement

We are looking for a Design Engineer to join our team in Ashburn, Virginia. This role is within the Hanley Energy US East Region providing project support to the Engineering and Management teams. Minimum availability of 10% travel if needed. International opportunities are a possibility within Hanley Energy.


Basic Experience Qualifications

Are you passionate about electrical or industrial engineering and eager to contribute to dynamic projects in critical environments? We are looking for someone with the following qualifications and expertise to join our innovative team:

·        A foundation in Electrical or Industrial Engineering with any of these qualifications:

o 4 Year Engineering Degree from an accredited university

o 1-2 years of experience in a technical field.

§ Technical training from military training, trade school, university, or college and relevant working experience equivalent to a 2-year degree in STEM plus 2 years of relevant working experience

§ 2-year degree in STEM plus 2 years of relevant working experience

·        Technical Expertise

Ideal candidates bring prior experience in one or more of the following areas:

o Critical Environments: Knowledge of Data Centers or industries like Water, Oil, or Gas.

o System Knowledge: Familiarity with Industrial BMS (Building Management Systems) and EPMS (Electrical Power Monitoring Systems).

o Electrical Components:

o Single-pole, two-pole, and three-pole breakers and their applications.

o Switchgear, transformers, low-voltage panels, UPSs, ATSs, generators, and busbars.

o Power Systems: Understanding AC vs. DC power applications.

o Fluid Networks: Knowledge in liquid-cooled IT applications, including coolant distribution units, manifolds, and piping design.

·        Technical Tools:

o Proficient in AutoCAD (2D) and SolidWorks (2D/3D) for editing/designing SLD, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and panel designs, as well as redline markups.

o Skilled in troubleshooting and reviewing electrical systems.

o Experience with Bluebeam, Excel, and other tools for vendor submittals and design modifications.

·        Project Work:

o Hands-on mechanical and electrical installation (lab or field settings).

o Reviewing and approving equipment submittals.

·        Key Attributes

o Problem Solver: Be the go-to resource for in-office, phone or remote work for reviews and technical support when needed.

o Willing to Travel: Comfortable with up to 10% travel to support regional teams or customer site visits.


Preferred Experience Qualifications

We are seeking candidates who bring additional expertise to the table. While not every skill is required, the ideal candidates will have experience in:

  • Familiarity with most of the Basic Experience Qualifications listed above.
  • Hands-on experience planning, programming, designing, or executing Critical Infrastructure projects.
  • Practical knowledge of HVAC equipment and controls.
  • Proficiency with EPMS/BMS communication protocols.

Roles/Goals/Responsibilities:

As a key contributor to our team, you will take on diverse responsibilities that ensure the success of critical infrastructure projects:

Project Planning & Execution

Collaborate on the planning and design of Critical Infrastructure projects.

o Leverage AutoCAD and related software to create full submittals and edit vendor designs.

o Interpret and utilize vendor-provided submittals and technical documents.

o Review and analyze device datasheets with an eye for detail.

Technical Expertise & Problem-Solving

o Apply basic electrical principles, including Ohm's Law, voltage divider circuits, single-phase vs. three-phase systems, Kirchhoff's Voltage Law, and Kirchhoff's Current Law.

o Issue Requests for Information (RFIs) when necessary to clarify project details.

o Learn and adapt to new systems and products as they emerge.

System Integration & Feedback

o Expand your skills in system integration and share insights with the team.

o Provide feedback on technical documentation, including mechanical/electrical/plumbing diagrams, sequences of operation, and operating procedures.

Collaboration & Communication

o Support Hanley Energy Ticketing System and manage project workflows through ProCore Project Management.

o Coordinate with customers, vendors, and other stakeholders to ensure seamless execution of our scope of work.

o Contribute to team training and development, fostering a collaborative learning environment.
