Job Description

Summary/Objective
The Dean of Students oversees the daily operations of student behavior, academic performance, and overall well-being at Hanna Academy, a specialized high school dedicated to serving students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) referred by their home districts. This role is integral in fostering a supportive, inclusive environment where students can achieve academic and personal success through adequate and compassionate care from our dedicated staff. The Dean of Students will collaborate with families, staff, and Hanna’s NPS program, ensuring the smooth and effective implementation of programs and aligning school policies with the needs of students requiring special education services. The ultimate goal is to ensure that all students, regardless of ability, reach their full potential in an inclusive and supportive school environment.

  1. Student Support and Development
    • Serve as the primary contact for monitoring students’ behavior, academic progress, and emotional well-being.
    • Provide individual and group restorative practices as needed, collaborating with therapeutic teams, including Hanna NPS Residential staff and the Mental Health Hub, to ensure comprehensive care.
    • Participate in IEP meetings and consistently monitor the progress of IEP goals. As they pertain to student behavioral outcomes.
    • Develop and implement clear, consistent policies for student behavior, expectations, and consequences.
    • Promote positive behavior strategies that align with therapeutic objectives.
    • Address behavioral concerns through targeted interventions, supporting students in developing self-regulation skills.
    • Maintain student records, including incident reports and behavioral plans, ensuring confidentiality and adherence to facility policies.
    • Serves as a liaison between the Academy and Residential as it pertains to behavioral modifications and implementation plans.
  2. Program Coordination
    • Coordinate with educational and clinical staff to ensure that students’ needs are met across academic, behavioral, and therapeutic domains.
    • Implement and monitor Individualized Treatment Plans (ITPs), ensuring alignment with treatment goals in collaboration with Hanna NPS for residential students.
    • Assist in creating and overseeing student schedules, ensuring students are engaged in appropriate educational curriculum.
    • Help in the development of all accreditation efforts the school is required to record.
  3. Collaboration and Communication
    • Participate in regular meetings with staff, including clinicians, teachers, and residential staff, to discuss student progress, challenges, and action plans.
    • Act as a liaison between families, students, and facility staff, helping resolve issues and ensuring positive communication.
    • Support the admissions process by providing insight into prospective students’ needs and ensuring students are appropriately placed within the program.

Qualifications

  • Education & Experience:
    • At least 3-5 years of experience working in a residential treatment setting or school environment, preferably with students who have emotional, behavioral, or psychological needs.
    • Previous leadership experience in a similar environment is preferred.
  • Skills:
    • Strong understanding of child and adolescent development, therapeutic techniques, and behavioral intervention strategies.
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with staff, students, and families.
    • Knowledge of crisis intervention and conflict resolution strategies.
    • Ability to make decisions in high-pressure situations.
    • Strong organizational and record-keeping skills.
    • Cultural competency and an understanding of the diverse needs of students in a residential treatment setting.
  • Physical Requirements:
    • Ability to assist in restraining or managing physically challenging students, if necessary (training will be provided).
    • Ability to engage in regular physical activities, including attending activities and group sessions.
