Job Overview
This full time position is responsible for investigating and counseling students and families with excessive attendance problems; assesses students' and families' compliance with school and tribal truancy policies; works with the school administrators to develop prevention/intervention strategies, monitors individual student progress-documents intervention steps and communications-makes home visits and makes referrals to appropriate community agencies when necessary; institues legal proceedings and presents case information when necessary to the tribal court; provides instruction to all students regarding the importance of regular school attendance and implements an incentive program promoting positive school attendance by all. To be knowledgeable of the school's student and staff handbooks, attendance policy, the tribal children's code, The Indian Child Welfare Act and policies regarding children with disabilities and provide education to the community about them; hold meetings in schools and home visits with youth and their families about truancy to promote education; provide basic counseling; provide referrals for service to youth and family; facilitate diversionary meeting with youth, families and tribal court representatives. Associate degree in social work, psychology, education, counseling, criminal justice or related field required (Bachelor's degree preferred). Must possess and maintain a valid MI. driver's license; experience providing services for school aged children, knowledge of court, civil court proceedings, tribal law and policies and generally accepted office practices; have extensive knowledge of community programs and resources. Must maintain confidentiality in accordance with applicable federal FERPA law and provide support resources for students and their families.
