Description
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES :
To help students learn subject matter and skills in the subject areas required. Provides intensive tutoring autonomously to students including those with special needs. The positionis responsible for planning, delivering, and evaluating student progress based upon specific goals and objectives established by Hanover County Public Schools and based on the Virginia Standards of Learning.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES :

- Prepares daily instruction and activities using the division's curriculum and / or assigned study materials to provide for the individual needs, abilities, and interests of the students;
- Autonomously assists small groups of children in various subject areas;
- Assesses students' learning on an ongoing basis and alters instruction to meet group / individual needs;
- Evaluate students' learning and uses results for further student instruction;
- Develops and maintains a favorable psychological and physical environment that is conducive to effective learning;
- Maintains order and encourages students to set and maintain high standards of classroom behavior within the classroom setting in accordance with division guidelines regarding pupil behavior management.
- Selects and utilizes materials appropriate to the students' instructional levels;
- Organizes learning activities to achieve specific concepts to reinforce skills taught by the classroom teacher;
- Attends and participates in district level in-service training programs, faculty and department meetings, as required;
- Establishes friendly and cooperative relationships between the home and the school;
- Establishes and maintains cooperative professional relations with others;
- Demonstrates commitment to improving professional competence;
- Respects the home responsibility of parents for their children;
- Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities;
- Maintains accurate, complete and correct records as required by law, district policy and administrative regulations;
- Performs other duties as assigned by the administration in accordance with the school division's policies and practices.
Qualifications : KSA's, Education
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES :
General knowledge of modern practices, techniques, and methods for teaching children including students with special education needs; the principles of educational testing and principles and methods of remedial education; the principles and methods of educational research. Ability to apply modern methods and principles of education to students functioning at multiple levels of mastery; maintain proper discipline as aligned with division guidelines regarding pupil behavior management; establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and students. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE :
Required : High school diploma and previous experience working with groups of children.
Requirements for Title I School Placements :
Must meet the qualifications of "highly qualified" under No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 :
Preferred : Associate degree - CDA in Child Development preferred or a Bachelor's or Master's Degree from accredited institution and courses in professional education or teacher's license.

WORK SCHEDULE : Defined hourly schedule per day for 37.25 hours per week

Licensed / Previously Licensed personnel - $30.53 / hour
Non-licensed personnel - $18.62 / hour

PHYSICAL CONDITIONS :
Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees, students and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Work is typically performed in a school setting including; classroom, gym, cafeteria, auditorium and recreational areas. Frequent walking, standing, occasional lifting up to 25 pounds may be required. Occasional travel may be necessary. Occasional movement of students by wheel chairs and other mechanical devices may be required. Regular instruction to special needs students may be necessary. Daily personal and close contact with students to provide classroom management and learning environment support is required. Regular contact with other staff members and students is required.
