Description
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES :
To provide a learning environment that helps preschool children develop physically, socially, emotionally, and intellectually in a manner appropriate to their age and stage of development. Responsible for planning, delivering and evaluating instruction based upon specific goals and objectives established by Hanover County Public Schools, the Head Start Early Learning Outcomes Framework and Virginia's Foundation Blocks for Early Learning.

- Provides leadership in structuring a learning environment that supports child and staff compliance with Head Start Performance Standards and Virginia Preschool Initiative guidelines;
- Prepares daily instruction and activities using the Frog Street and Second Step curriculum;
- Assesses students' learning on an ongoing basis using preschool assessments and Teaching Strategies GOLD and adjusts instruction to meet group / individual needs;
- Serves as a role model for preschool children in all domains of development;
- Responsible for the safe arrival and departure of preschool children;
- Provides opportunities to develop self-help skills;
- Develops and maintains a favorable psychological and physical environment that is conducive to effective learning;
- Promotes and implements the development of personal hygiene and social skills among preschool children;
- Selects and utilizes materials appropriate to the students' instructional levels;
- Organizes learning activities to achieve specific concepts;
- Attends training and staff development activities;
- Attends family events and workshops;
- Establishes friendly and cooperative relationships between the home and the school;
- Works in conjunction with the Coordinator of Preschool and School Administration to initiate referrals for special education services and provides follow up as needed;
- Works closely with the Student & Family Services Specialist to inform families about meetings, workshops and family events;
- Works as a partner with parents through home visits, conferences and on-going communication;
- Maintains accurate, complete and timely records as required by law, Head Start Performance Standards, VPI guidelines, district policy and administrative regulations;
- Performs other duties as assigned by the administration in accordance with the Head Start Performance Standards, the Virginia Preschool Initiative guidelines and the school division's policies and practices

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES :
Comprehensive knowledge of : modern practices, techniques, and methods of teaching; the principles of educational testing and principles and methods of remedial education; effective means of supervision and instruction as applied to the work of Instructional Assistants; the needs and requirements of working with students with disabilities; the principles and methods of educational research. Ability to : apply modern methods and principles of education to pupils functioning at the early elementary level; maintain an interest in the positive improvement and development of young children of normal and / or impaired learning ability; maintain proper discipline; establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, students and families. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE :
Required : Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution. Preferred : Masters Degree from accredited institution.

Physical requirements and Disclaimer
PHYSICAL CONDITIONS : Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees, students, families and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Work is typically performed in a school setting including; classroom, gym, cafeteria, auditorium and recreational areas. Frequent walking, standing, occasional lifting up to 25 pounds may be required. Travel with students on field trips will be required. Occasional movement of students by wheelchairs and other mechanical devices may be required. Regular instruction to special needs children may be necessary. Daily personal and close contact with students to provide classroom management and learning environment support is required. Regular contact with other staff members and parents is required. Frequent contact with parents by phone and in person is necessary.
