GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIESResponsible for enforcing the compulsory school attendance law for mainstream school population, GED participants under 18, private day students and home instruction students.Essential Duties: (These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.)Serve as liaison between Hanover County Public Schools and Hanover Juvenile & Domestic Relations District CourtReceive truancy referrals from School Social Workers and Court Services Intake Officer for truancyFile CHINS Supervision petitions, with Affidavits, with Intake Officer for truancyInitiate a parent expectation meeting for elementary truancy cases.Consult with Court staff regarding court dates, charges, hearings and other mattersPresent information to magistrate for criminal charges, as necessary, against parents for failing to send children to schoolProvide testimony and evidentiary support in all truancy cases in courtWork cooperatively with Hanover County Attorney’s Office, as well as Hanover County Commonwealth Attorney’s Office, in prosecuting casesRefer truant students to Family Assessment and Planning Team (FAPT) for supportive servicesPresent accurate information to FAPT while requesting community resources for truant students and families Serve as Lead Agency Case Manager at FAPT for assigned casesCommunicate with service providers to monitor provision of services, compliance and progressWork closely with Hanover County community agencies, including Department of Social Services, Community Services Board, Community Resources, as well as all private providers serving Hanover familiesProvide active case management for assigned truancy cases to support increased school attendance Ensure weekly direct contact with assigned students at school or in the communityCommunicate regularly with school officials regarding assigned studentsAttend all school-based meetings regarding assigned students, to include attendance, discipline or Special Education meetingsReview and enforce Court Rules with students, and administer random urine screens as appropriateMaintain required statistical information and case records for assigned studentsRecord and verify monthly statistical information for truancyUpdate and maintain truancy policy and procedure in accordance with state lawMaintain daily log of case contactsInvestigate, as needed, residency, variance, or “10 day no show” cases as requestedPerforms other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Ability to communicate clearly and correctly in verbal and written modes. Ability to manage controversy and confrontation in a positive manner. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCEMasters degree. Three years experience as a classroom teacher. One year experience as a division-level supervisor or administrator. Endorsement in Social Work preferred. Valid Va. Driver’s LicenseA comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

PHYSICAL CONDITIONSMust have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to a, personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. No significant climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions.
