Job Summary
Directs, advises and manages all activity performed within the Area Port location ensuring that equipment is properly monitored, managed and repositioned. Exercises independent judgment and discretion to responsibly direct subordinate labor and issues work assignments to ensure the effective performance of these operations. As a manager, the incumbent in this position participates in strategic direction for the Company and contributes to the business wide strategy. He / She is responsible for providing employees with direction and guidance in handling difficult or complex problems and in resolving complex, escalated complaints, or disputes. The Equipment and M&R Manager is also responsible for exercising independent judgment to administer discipline (including up to suspension or termination of employment) and reward employees he / she manages and for adjusting grievances raised by labor reporting to him / her. He / She will resolve complex issues requiring specialized knowledge of a functional area and / or broad knowledge across functions for both internal and external customers. The Manager possess and applies comprehensive knowledge of the principles, practices, and procedures of a particular field of specialization in order to resolve complex issues or to build consensus. He / She may manage complex accounts, claims or customers. The manager may manage mid to large size teams of subordinate labor working in the Equipment and M&R departments.
Job Responsibilities
Focuses on directing, coaching, and developing staff to execute all the required procedures and functions
Direct subordinate labor working in the EQ and M&R departments to achieve efficient and safe operations by maximizing labor efficiency and operational productivity.
Use independent judgment and discretion to administer and carry out discipline of, or reward, subordinate labor, including advising, warning, citing, suspending, discharging, or rewarding labor.
Exercises discretion and independent judgment to address, adjust, and resolve grievances and implement appropriate resolutions.
Analyses shipment problems and identifies corrective actions
Provides training for staff on new systems, regulations and requirements
Develops new business processes for smoother workflows
Makes certain that all departmental and functional training requirements are fulfilled
Review and approve invoices created by various terminals venders
Ensures consistent application of Hapag-Lloyd policies to all personnel actions
Maintains up-to-date knowledge of all services that Hapag-Lloyd offers and ensures that the information given to the account base is accurate
Adherence to PREX - Process Excellence, process as available on HIP
Guides, coaches and support the EQ and M&R Departments
Keeps updated on all system changes and ensures that staff is accordingly aware of the changes
Monitors and measures workload to ensure best process is in place
Assists staff with trouble shooting issues and handles elevated customer problems
Acts as back up to Intermodal and Port Terminal Operations & Vessel Close managers when necessary (i.e. vacations, absences)
Ensures that staff comply with the provisions of the OCU Agreement
Maintains firmly the company's position even during adverse situations, especially when subject to pressure from the Union.
Ensures that company systems are updated correctly and in a timely manger
Equipment
Manage equipment stock levels throughout area and ensure repositioning of equipment in support of RNA and all Regions / Areas
Liaise with internal departments to plan timely movement and availability of equipment, including gensets
Creates action plans for equipment imbalance issues
Ensures that company systems are updated correctly and in a timely manger
Monitor and ensure LGB Off-hire goals are met in support with the Import Department
Point of contact and escalation with our nominated deports (and terminals), for equipment-related topics
Regional Equipment Support
Oversees maintenance and repair programs with vendors, including performance evaluation, physical audits and quality audits
Reports and controls costs, including preparation of cost reports by location in equipment type, part prices and labor task times
Evaluates equipment to assure that new equipment purchases are up to specifications
Follow up with manufacturers on equipment performance in the field
Conducts physical inspections of Hapag-Lloyd equipment at the terminals
Reviews and determines liability of damage and damage recovery of equipment
Manages vendor relationship in order to contain lower costs while maintaining company standards of quality of maintenance and repair
Job Qualifications
University degree and a minimum of 5 years of experience in the Maritime Industry or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Possesses specialized knowledge of 5 or more years and / or 2 years in a broader functional area.

Generally responsible for supervising and managing staff within the Operations Department. Back up for Intermodal and PTO & VC Managers, when needed.
