What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lifeguard/Camp Counselor position at Happy Hollow Children's Camp?
JOB SUMMARY: Happy Hollow Summer Camp, which hosts 10 weeks of overnight camp for children ages 7- 14, is seeking enthusiastic, responsible, and creative lifeguards to provide a safe and memorable experience for our campers. Our lifeguards are responsible for maintaining a safe and fun environment for campers and staff down at the waterfront during camp. Duties include conducting swim tests, leading water games for campers, and responding to emergencies as needed. The counselor will be assigned to a group of 4-5 campers and will be in a cabin group of 6-10 campers with another staff. Counselor duties include, but are not limited to, supervising campers, cabin, and mealtimes, overseeing transitions to and from scheduled activities, and supervising showers and bedtime, etc. The ideal candidate should be an excellent multitasker with a genuine passion for working with and empowering young people.
QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:
- College student or at least 18 years of age
- Current Red Cross Lifeguard Certification
- Experience in guarding a waterfront/pool preferred
- Desire and ability to work with children outdoors
- At least 1-2 years of youth leadership experience preferred
- Ability to accept supervision and feedback
- Good character, integrity, and ability to adapt to a camp setting
- Physical ability to participate in strenuous activities (hiking, swimming, climbing)
- Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self-control
- Ability to pass a background check
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Abide by all camp rules
- Successfully complete pre-camp staff training
- Pass lifeguard training during staff training
- Set up beach front swim area during staff training to include inventory, rules, lesson plans, equipment inspection, waterfront inspection, and cleaning
- Ability to teach and help coordinate camp’s waterfront and swimming activities, and help maintain standards that lead to a quality program
- Conduct orientation to all new participants that includes rules, safety procedures, and proper use of equipment
Assist in coordinating waterfront activities with special events and themes
- Plan alternate programs to be used in inclement weather
- Perform mid-summer in service for emergency procedures and rescues
- Keep waterfront and swim area neat and orderly
- Inform the Camp Director of needed supplies, preferably one week in advance
- Submit to Camp Director, weekly evaluations of swim program
- Prepare achievement recognition awards
- Assist in organizing and conducting other camp activities
- Assist with camper supervision in the cabin, at meals, bedtime, on duty, and all-camp activities
- Ensure all equipment is properly inventoried, cleaned and stored at the end of camp
- Other duties as assigned
