Job Summary:
The Patrol Captain is responsible for overseeing the operations, personnel, and resources of the Patrol Division. This position ensures public safety, enforcement of laws, and the implementation of departmental policies and procedures. The Patrol Captain serves as a key member of the Sheriff's Office leadership team, fostering effective communication and collaboration within the agency and with the community.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership and Supervision:
Supervise and manage the Patrol Division, including Lieutenants, Sergeants, and Deputies.
Develop schedules to ensure adequate coverage for patrol operations.
Approves training requests and professional development for staff.
Evaluate personnel performance and recommend promotions, disciplinary actions, or terminations as needed.
Operational Oversight:
Plan, organize, and direct patrol activities to ensure effective law enforcement coverage.
Monitor crime trends and allocate resources to address areas of concern.
Respond to major incidents or emergencies, providing leadership and coordination.
Implement and enforce departmental policies, procedures, and directives.
Administrative Duties:
Participate in preparing and managing the Patrol Division budget, including allocation of resources and tracking expenditures.
Review and approve reports, incident summaries, and operational plans.
Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal laws, as well as departmental standards.
Conduct internal investigations related to personnel or operational issues within the Patrol Division.
Community Relations:
Serve as a liaison between the Sheriff’s Office and the community.
Participate in community meetings and events to address public concerns and foster trust.
Work collaboratively with other law enforcement agencies, government officials, and community organizations.
Policy and Strategy Development:
Develop strategies to improve public safety and enhance operational efficiency.
Evaluate and recommend updates to departmental policies and procedures.
Stay informed on best practices, emerging technologies, and legislative changes affecting law enforcement.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, or a related field (preferred).
Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience, including supervisory roles.
Certification as a law enforcement officer by GAPOST.
Skills and Competencies:
Strong leadership and decision-making abilities.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Knowledge of modern law enforcement principles, practices, and equipment.
Ability to analyze complex situations and implement effective solutions.
Proficiency in budgeting, resource management, and strategic planning.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to perform the physical duties of a law enforcement officer, including responding to emergencies and operating patrol vehicles.
Willingness to work irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as needed.
Working Conditions:
Combination of office work and fieldwork, with exposure to potentially hazardous situations.
Will be required to wear a uniform and carry a firearm.
