About Harbor Haven Day Camp:
Harbor Haven was created in 1996 to provide children with special needs the opportunity to experience the magic of summer camp with the supports they need. Today, Harbor Haven is 7 weeks of summer fun for many campers across northern New Jersey. Within the fun and exciting environment of camp, our primary purpose is to support each camper in the areas of: social and group skills, language/communication, behavior, academics, and fine/gross motor skills. We want each child to experience success, thereby building confidence and positive self-esteem. As a member of our camp team, you play an essential role in each camper’s summer experience! Job Description:
Lifeguards help the pool head to complete the daily duties of the pool including pool care, instructing swim lessons, and guarding. Lifeguards work closely with the pool head and group counselors to best support the campers during instructional swim. At time lifeguards teach group swim lessons, support during group lessons, and work one-on-one with a camper. The pool head also guards and supports campers during the recreational swim portion of each period. Lifeguards must follow all safety measures and uphold safety at all times. The Harbor Haven pool is small and no more than 2 groups will swim at a time. (Average of 10 campers per group.) Each group has a minimum of 2 counselors. The lifeguards should utilize counselors during swim lessons and free swim to support campers and promote safety. Additionally, the pool staff plays a major role in making sure each camper has an amazing summer experience, often being the reason they leave camp with a new skill, a fear conquered, and feeling confident.
Lifeguard Expectations
- Attend pre camp trainings.
- Attendance each day at camp is mandatory to help maintain consistency and safety.
- Enforce the pool rules and keep the safety of the campers & staff top of mind.
- Teach appropriate lessons for each group of campers.
- Take and implement feedback from pool head & directors as needed.
- Use patience and understanding when working with campers.
Minimum requirements:
- Have prior lifeguarding or other relevant experience.
- Have a current lifeguard or other relevant certification.
- Willing to become certified or recertified.
- Clear communication skills.
Preferred Skills:
- Great communication skills with children of various ages as well as with coworkers
- Exhibit kindness, patience, and compassion
- Ability to manage groups of counselors and campers in a positive manner.
- Strong swimming skills.
2024 Dates
- Orientation week: June 16th-22nd (evening training sessions both virtual & in person)
- First Day of Camp: June 23th *Closed on July 4th*
- Last Day of Camp: August 7th
- Camp Clean Up: August 8th
Hours
- Monday - Friday
- Arrive by: 8:30 am
- In place by: 8:45 am
- Dismissed at: 3:45 pm
