PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: This individual is responsible for the nature and quality of all nursing care delivered on that shift. The Head Nurse may delegate selected tasks but, in doing so, is responsible for exercising that degree of judgment and knowledge that shall ensure the safe and therapeutic program of nursing care. He/she shall participate through an interdepartmental approach in meeting the nursing needs of the patients at Harbor House. The Nurse Manager must be flexible and may be required to fill in shifts in the absence of subordinate staff. The Head Nurse will perform clinically privileged services. JOB SPECIFICATIONS1. Performs a comprehensive assessment of the patient's health care needs (nursing) based on data collected through history, observation, biopsychosocial, and diagnostic data analysis.a. Performs nursing assessments on patients using available sources of information, including patient and family medical records.b. Interview patients and families using acceptable techniques appropriate for the individual's level of functioning to obtain necessary information regarding medical background.c. Performs appropriate routine tests and takes vital signs; orders and performs appropriate laboratory studies according to established protocols (i.e., weight, height, blood pressure, and urinalysis).d. Collects and disposes of specimens for diagnostic testing according to established procedures.e. Thoroughly review patients' charts for background information and correctly identify biopsychosocial stressors.f. Accurately documents assessment findings to produce a complete medical record (including physical, mental and or social problems) on patients in a clear, complete and concise manner within established time frames.g. Sets up examination room and prepares patients for treatment by the attending physician according to established guidelines.2. Performs various administrative, clerical and documentation activities to support unit activities.a. Records patient care and other information on appropriate forms in a legible, clear and timely manner according to established unit policy and standards of care.b. Transcribes and or countersigns physicians' orders according to established guidelines.c. Maintains and ensures confidentiality of patients' conditions and records, unit records, staff, and other data on a regular basis.d. Maintains accurate and well-organized office files and patient medical records according to established guidelines.e. Prepares complete and accurate reports, logs, and control sheets [ Infection Control and PI Forms and diet assessment with diet orders for Food Services] according to established procedures and or formats and submits to appropriate personnel in a timely manner. 3. Provides health education instruction to patients on various health issues. Provides in-service training and coaching for staff.a. Initiates procedures for referral to external health agencies in accordance with established policies.b. Provide clear and well-organized in-service coaching to staff, which addresses specific training needs.4. Communicate, as necessary, with other medical and departmental personnel to coordinate efforts, resolve operational problems and improve the quality of patient care.a. Works cooperatively with other department personnel to consistently provide and maintain a safe, clean, well-supplied and attractive environment for quality care.b. Accurately identifies, measures, evaluates and resolves deficiencies found in the patient care process in a timely manner.c. Assesses the physical condition of the unit regularly. Reports needed repairs to the facility to appropriate personnel on a timely basis.5. Supervises subordinate staff in the daily operations of the medical unit.a. Assigns work during all shifts. Consider staffing guidelines, staff abilities, and patient needs when making decisions. Ensures coverage is complete and appropriate. Regularly monitors the work of assigned staff to ensure that patient's treatment/nursing care plans are implemented and that all other assignments are completed.b. Uses appropriate techniques to train less experienced nurses and other health care workers in nursing practice.c. Complete competency checklists for all nursing staff and discuss findings with the medical director. 6. Provides surveillance and maintenance of infection control program.a. Provides timely and appropriate training to staff and or other personnel in the prevention and control of infection and infectious diseases.b. Adheres to universal precautions in all situations to prevent the spread of infection.c. Regularly monitors infection control procedures. Develop a well-organized system for monitoring and reporting potential and diagnosed infections and infectious diseases. Takes corrective action as appropriate.7. Provides an environment that demonstrates caring, compassion and respect for all patients.a. Maintains patient privacy and confidentiality.b. Cordially greets all patients when approaching or being approached by them.c. Responds to patients in a manner that conveys a willingness to assist.d. Provides patient care in a non-judgmental and non-discriminatory manner.e. Always maintains a professional relationship with patients.8. Provides supportive counseling to individuals, groups or families to assist in identifying problem areas and provide direction towards effecting positive change.9. Provides crisis management in various community environments for all age and disability groups.a. Conducts assessments of adults who are experiencing severe emotional problems utilizing specific crisis management skills.b. Develops treatment/nursing care plans that facilitate appropriate levels of care for patients in crisis.c. Maintains knowledge of facility resources that would facilitate stabilizing patients in crisis.10. Prepare medication administration records for all units monthly.11. Responsible for checking all Harbor House and VA’s First Aid Kits for expiration dates and contents; Refill as needed.12. Ensures coverage for medication administration.13. Liaison between VA nurses and Harbor House nursing staff to communicate treatment and problem areas.14. Ensures inventory of stocked medications is maintained.15. Maintains proficiencies as documented on the competency checklist for specific job functions.16. The nurse manager actively supports Harbor House’s efforts to achieve and sustain mental health accreditation. In addition, the Nurse Manager follows the policies, procedures, protocols, and standards of all Harbor House funding sources and regulatory agencies.
Requirements
Positions Qualifications:
1. Minimum Education - Graduation from an accredited educational institution of professional nursing. No waiver of education shall be granted.
2. Minimum Experience – 2 years of nursing experience with working knowledge of behavioral healthcare.
3. Minimum Licensure/Certification – RN Current State License - State of Mississippi, Current CPR Certification and First Aid Training.
