What are the responsibilities and job description for the Safety Specialist position at Harbor Industries?
Summary
The Safety Specialist will develop, monitor, and evaluate workplace conditions, processes, and practices, as well as health and safety programs & policies to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local safety regulations and Harbor standards. The Safety Specialist must be comfortable communicating at all levels of the organization, utilizing interpersonal skills to lead safety initiatives and educate team members regarding safety procedures. The ideal person will have a strong commitment to safety and take a proactive approach to helping others maintain a safe work environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Develop, implement, and maintain programs and policies intended to reduce or eliminate occupational injuries, illness, deaths, or financial losses, proactively developing accident-prevention and loss-control systems and programs
Monitor and evaluate Harbor facilities to ensure compliance with governmental regulatory agencies including Occupational Health and Safety Administration and other agencies as needed
Manage all Safety Training requirements (Safety Training Calendar, New Hire Safety Orientation, etc.) including conducting training, utilizing Learning Management System (LMS) to administer training, creating training materials, communicating via email or company intranet to announce training expectations, coordinating with various organization leaders to schedule training, and reporting/recordkeeping on training completion
Review, analyze, and monitor incident and accident reports to identify root causes, provide coaching, recommend corrective action, identify trends (reviewing statistical information and preparing reports if necessary), and present findings to HR Manager and Operations Leadership
Process accident and injury reports in HRIS and file necessary documents, including processing Workers Comp related claims and paperwork, coordinating with the Sr. HR Generalist for payroll purposes
Manage mandatory and optional PPE programs including issuing, renewing and tracking of PPE
Partner with Operations Leadership to ensure manufacturing, maintenance, and associated departments are supported when starting new initiatives or new product lines
Oversee all driver related safety responsibilities (Reporting, maintenance of Driver Safety Policy and related training and motor vehicle record checks, verifications of POI for drivers, audits, etc.)
Serve as primary point of contact for outside organizations such as fire departments, health departments, mutual aid societies, vendors, and rescue teams
Lead Harbor Safety Committee’s for both manufacturing facilities, completing internal safety audits
Collaborate with HR team members on specific injury/safety related issues depending on the needs of the situation, keeping in close communication with the HR Manager regarding any safety related concerns or compliance issues
Handle all OSHA reporting & recording
Maintain MSDS documentation, manage the MSDS program, and coordinate with personnel procuring items to ensure MSDS sheets or obtained
Utilize interpersonal skills and electronic communication tools (intranet, email) to increase safety awareness throughout the organization
Maintain safety related supplies including but not limited to PPE, First Aid
Maintain confidentiality with sensitive information
Travel will be required approximately one time per month to Harbor’s Charlevoix facility but may also be required at other times, requiring maintaining a valid driver's license and satisfactory driving record
Other duties may be assigned at any time

Education and/or Experience
4-7 years of experience within EHS or Safety in a manufacturing environment
Bachelor’s degree in Occupational and Environmental Safety or a related field is preferred, but open to a combination of education and experience in lieu of a degree
Intermediate level skills with Google Workspace (Gmail, Calendar, Chat, Sheets, Slides) or similar software
Strong understanding of OSHA/MIOSHA requirements, with OSHA 30-Hour Certification preferred
First Aid/CPR Certification preferred
Ability to learn new software programs quickly, with a passion for utilizing new tools/technologies to improve processes
Strong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple deadlines
Strong analytical and problem solving skills
