What are the responsibilities and job description for the Substitute Teacher position at Harbor Montessori School?
Harbor Montessori School is seeking a nurturing, dynamic, flexible team player to join our Substitute Teacher Pool! The ideal candidate would have experience in working with infants through to Junior High students and would be familiar with the Montessori method of education. The hours for this role vary but ideally, availability from 7:30am-5:30pm is appreciated.
Title: Substitute Teacher
Summary of Position:
The Harbor Montessori School Substitute Teacher understands and promotes the school's mission, vision, objectives, and policies both within and outside the immediate school community. The Substitute Teachers responsible for providing a safe and productive learning environment for students in accordance with the school's mission, vision objectives and policies. Substitute teachers' hours and responsibilities vary by program and classroom. Often Substitute Teachers work in both the childcare program and the Montessori classrooms.
CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT
The Substitute Teacher is responsible alongside the head or assistant teacher for preparing an environment that meets the sensitive period/plane of development of the children with whom they work.
- Assists the Head or Assistant Teacher with the care and maintenance of classroom materials, i.e. maintaining an orderly environment, keeping it clean and in good condition, as directed
- Repairs materials and equipment, as necessary or directed.
- Helps maintain an environment that meets or exceeds State health, fire, and childcare requirements.
CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT
The Substitute Teacher is responsible for providing a consistent, safe and positive experience for all children with whom they work with.
- Phrases any directives positively when speaking with the children.
- Works with individual and small groups of children as directed by the Head Teacher. Supervises classroom as directed by the Head Teacher, Establishes positive relationships with students which, while recognizing the differing roles of adult and child, are characterized by mutual respect and good will.
- Protects the peace and privacy of the children at work.
CHILD SAFETY
The Substitute Teacher shares the responsibility for the safety and physical well being of the children at all times.
The children are not to be left unattended, and classroom teacher to student ratios must be maintained on the playground as they are inside. Helps supervise children in the execution of fire drills if you are on campus. The routine is to be clearly established and the building exited with dispatch and order. Reports any and all accidents/incidents at once. Prepares a written report stating date, time, nature of accident, and action taken. Ensures that the Head Teacher is aware of the accident incident.

Follow the HMS dress code as indicated in the Faculty and Staff Handbook. Follow the Social Media policy as indicated in the Faculty and Staff Handbook. Notifies the Administrator immediately of personal or professional difficulties with children, parents, or staff. Participates in the establishment and maintenance of an atmosphere of collegial support and adherence to professional standards.
- Is self-aware and self-monitoring in identifying and solving student, curricula, and school problems. Listen to and appropriately redirect any parent question or concern.
- Refrains from gossip.
- Models integrity, curiosity, responsibility, creativity, and respect for all persons as well as an appreciation for racial, cultural, and gender issues and diversity.
- Attends staff meetings, as and when requested.
Substitute teachers are flexible, friendly and dedicated.
RELATED DUTIES
- Communicate and cooperate with the Administrator on program changes.
- Assist with other projects, programs and planning as assigned by the Head Teacher. Shares questions and observations with the Head Teacher. substitute teachers are responsible for communicating and collaborating to meet the needs of the students and support a positive classroom environment. Honest and positive communication is imperative in all working relationships at HMS.
