JOB SUMMARY
The Oncology Nurse Practitioner functions as an independent healthcare provider who is responsible for providing comprehensive care to both well and ill patients in a primarily outpatient setting. They will demonstrate a high degree of clinical expertise in working with patients with acute and chronic illnesses, specifically patients with Cancer. They are responsible for assessment, diagnosis, treatment, management, education, health promotion and care coordination for patients and families with acute and chronic health needs. The Nurse Practitioner demonstrates an advanced level of medical / nursing clinical knowledge, communication and interdisciplinary collaboration, professionalism and systems-based practice. They work with administrative, nursing, and physicians to assure safe, effective, quality patient care and to promote HMC's mission. The Nurse Practitioner will provide care within his / her scope of practice as outlined by applicable state law, licensing, regulations, institutional policy and practice agreements.
Reporting Structure : Reports to Essential Services Officer
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Education
Graduate of an approved Nurse Practitioner Program
Work Experience
Must have five (5) years RN nursing experience in an acute care hospital with some advanced nursing work experience preferred, and one (1) year experience as a Oncology Nurse Practitioner.
License / Certification
Certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners or the American Nurses Credentialing Center or both
Licensed by the Tennessee State Board of Nursing and in good standing
DEA License
Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS)
Current certification in Advanced Life Support (ACLS)

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Oncology
- Conduct comprehensive or episodic health history and physical assessment of Cancer patients with acute, chronic and / or potential health problems.
- Establish medical diagnoses.
- Give counsel to patients of cancer by offering diverse treatment options and informing the patient on the treatment procedures. This is to help their expectations of the days ahead.
- Identify and provide treatment for health-related cases concerning cancer.
- Offering emotional assistance to patients of cancer as well as their families by engaging in constant updates on diverse assistant units which can be readily obtainable at the patient's disposal.
- Provide helpful resources on the patient and patient's families to enhance positive results.
- Carry patients and their families along on treatment plan, procedures, and possible outcome.
- Observe and record the patient's progress regularly.
- Oversee treatment infusions and supportive care needs.
- Write specific orders within the limits of the practice agreement / scope of practice including chemotherapy.
- Provide appropriate direction to clinic staff regarding patient care issues.
- Communicates effectively with referring and primary health care providers.
- Maintain clinical documentation according to HMC practice.
- Educates patients and families on treatment plans, wellness care, and survivorship plans
- May include consultation call responsibility.
