Summary:
A carpenter is responsible for working with wood and metal to build and repair structures and other items and they also may have to select and source appropriate materials depending on project needs. Their duties include calculating quotes, meeting with clients, and creating design plans for remodeling projects.
The Carpenter reports to the Superintendents or Project Manager as assigned.
Core Job Duties:
- Installs foundations, walls, floors, ceilings, and roofs using materials such as: wood, steel, metal, concrete, plastics, and composites of multiple materials.
- Fits and installs window frames, doors, door frames, door hardware, interior and exterior trim using a carpenter’s level, plumb bob, and laser levels.
- Erects scaffolding and ladders for assembling structures above-ground levels.
- Studies specifications in blueprints, sketches, or building plans to prepare project layout and determine dimensions and materials required.
- Shapes or cuts materials to specified measurements, using hand tools, machines, or power saws.
- Follows established safety rules and regulations and maintaining a safe and clean environment.
- Builds or repairs cabinets, doors, frameworks, floors, or other wooden fixtures used in buildings, using woodworking machines, hand tools, or power tools.
- Assembles and fastens materials to make frameworks or props, using hand tools and wood screws, nails, dowel pins, or glue.
- Removes damaged or defective parts or sections of structures and repair or replace, using hand tools.
- Inspects ceiling or floor tile, wall coverings, siding, glass, or woodwork to detect broken or damaged structures.
- Installing wooden structures such as roofing frames, rafters, partitions, joists and stud work
- Designing and installing cabinets, shelving, fitted furniture, drywall and insulation
- Adding fixtures and fittings such as door handles, locks, hinges and closures
- Selecting lumber by size and strength to suit each job, sourcing wood to suit the customer’s budget and style
- Calculating the number of fasteners required for each job
- Liaising with clients, suppliers and other construction professionals
- Reading blueprints and designs to work to specifications prepared by other construction professionals, architects and building code recommendations
- Moves necessary materials around Jobsite as assigned.
- Cleans up worksite debris.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Hold weekly job site safety meetings
Requirements
- Accurately follow instructions from foreman/superintendent
- Developed knowledge of tools and equipment
- Advanced knowledge of framework & finish carpentry and ability to assist/teach others
- Ability to accurately install/remove doors and windows
- Strong communication; must be able to communicate clearly and concisely with team members. Bilingual preferred
- Ability to anticipate needs
- Actively contribute to a safe working environment for all team members
- Ability to lift & load materials and equipment
- Proficiency in plan reading and material take-off
- Organizational skills including attention to detail and multi-tasking skills
- Safety OSHA 10 or 30 preferred
