The Harford County Public Library offers a competitive compensation and benefits package. Starting wage, depending on candidate qualifications, is between $15.48 and $19.65. This position is eligible for the following benefits: deferred compensation 457(b) retirement plan, pension plan, medical, dental and vision plans, employee assistance program, voluntary benefits, paid time off and more.
Position Summary:
The Delivery Driver delivers materials to branches throughout the library system and to other county facilities.
Essential Duties:
- Conduct daily pre-trip and safety inspection on vehicle before departing to deliver goods.
- Pack and load books, mail, electronic equipment and other library materials on to trucks, vans, or automobiles.
- Sort and label items as necessary.
- Deliver materials to branches in a timely manner.
- Pick up materials, supplies and equipment from retail stores and deliver them to branches or administrative offices as required.
- Read maps and follow written or verbal geographic directions.
- Obey traffic laws and follow established traffic and transportation procedures.
- Provide exceptional customer service to internal staff and external customers.
- Assist branches with setup and breakdown for events, as necessary.
- Keep the interior of vehicle clean and free of debris and clutter.
- Reports as essential personnel.
Standard Functions:
- Serves on committees and participates in workshops, seminars, and training as requested.
- Notifies supervisor with suggested ways to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of personnel and procedures and system-wide goals and objectives.
- Learns new skills and technologies to retain proficiency in areas of expertise.
- Is dependable and punctual.
- Maintains a positive, friendly, and cooperative attitude and provides consistent customer service.
- Upholds all library policies and procedures as defined in Harford County Public Library’s Policies and Procedures Manual.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements:
- High school diploma or G.E.D.
- One (1) or more years of related experience, commercial driving experience preferred.
- Must hold and maintain a valid Maryland driver’s license with no more than three (3) points.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a favorable criminal background and drug-test report.
- Ability to obtain and maintain Department of Transportation non-CDL medical certification.
- Ability to read, write and understand instructions.
- Ability to work day, evening, and weekend hours.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of customer service principles and practices.
- Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle in all types of weather.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to safely and neatly pack materials bins.
- Ability to be adaptable, flexible and patient with customers and staff.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Basic math and reading skills.
- Basic computer skills to include use of email, internet searches and ability to use web-based employee self-service portal.
Work Environment:
- Work requires strenuous effort in handling materials up to 60 pounds.
- May require working in adverse weather conditions.
- Observes safe work place practices, avoidance of trips and falls, proper lifting techniques and follows traffic regulations.
- The ability to sit for extended periods of time, bend, twist, squat, climb in and out of truck.
- Ability to work outdoors.
- Ability to travel to branch/outside locations is required.
Reporting Relationship:
This position reports to the Facilities & Operations Director. Does not supervise staff.
Work Week:
Primary work schedule consists of weekday shifts, but may require evening and weekend hours.
