Harford County Sheriff's Office is seeking to establish an eligibility list for the position of Deputy Sheriff-Lateral transfer, with responsibility for delivering law enforcement service throughout Harford County. This position requires that you are currently a certified police officer in the state of Maryland or currently a certified police officer in another state and eligible to transfer and complete a comparative compliance program approved by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commissions. THIS IS NOT AN ENTRY LEVEL POSITION.POSITION IS ENTITLED TO A $10,000 RECRUITMENT BONUS UPON HIRING AND COMPLETION OF FIELD TRAINING PROGRAM (pending funding availability).The Law Enforcement Deputy position has opportunities for overtime, compensatory time, holiday pay, shift differential for evening and midnight shifts and uniform allowance.Posted salary is proposed for July 1, 2025 and pending budget approval.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Patrols the County to maintain law and order. Responds to calls for service. Executes on-view arrests. Checks County businesses for security. Responds to reports of criminal complaints and makes necessary investigations. Delivers personal service upon inhabitants of the County of civil process issued out of Circuit and District Court of Harford County and also those civil papers forwarded from other jurisdictions within the state and out of state. Executes by arrests all warrants issued. Transports prisoners to and from penal institutions and courts in and out of Harford County. Maintains courtroom decorum during criminal trials and juvenile proceedings. Performs other duties as assigned.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Ability to act as a representative of the Sheriff's Office to the public.Ability to obtain a working knowledge of Annotated Code of Maryland, Harford County Ordinances, Uniform Traffic Code, Harford County Sheriff's Office Rules and Regulations, Harford County Government resources, state and federal agencies, District Court Commissioner system, Circuit and Juvenile Court processes, and Law Enforcement Code of Ethics.Ability to become skilled in the use of firearms, defensive driving, and self-defense techniques;Ability to complete Firearms Qualifications, Physical Training, Academic Standards, and other training by the Sheriff's Office; andKnowledge of problem solving techniques, grammar, spelling, arithmetic, and verbal and non-verbal communication skills.Selected Candidate: Must be 21 years of age or older and U.S. citizen with 10 years of verifiable US residency.Must pass comprehensive background investigation and criminal record check; medical exam and drug/alcohol screening; polygraph exam; and psychological screening.Must provide handwriting sample for review.Must appear before and receive a favorable recommendation from Oral Interview Board.Visible tattoos are permitted if they are not offensive, indecent, extremist, racist or sexist.
