Recreation Specialist I is an entry-level position in the area of recreation services in the Department of Parks and Recreation. An incumbent in this classification assists and reports to a higher-level Recreation Specialist. This position is responsible for organizing, promoting, and conducting programs throughout the County. An employee in this classification performs responsible administrative, research, and other support work for a department, agency, or office. Actual duties vary with assignment but are diverse in nature. The employee receives general supervision. Hours of work will include evenings and weekends.

- Creates, develops, establishes a budget for, promotes, advertises, and leads new recreation programs such as sports, arts and crafts, educational, etc for a wide variety of ages including preschool, school age, and adults, some of which could be offered in the evening or weekends.
- Receives and answers inquiries from employees and the public in the office and on the phone.
- Advises the public and others of established interpretations of department and County laws and regulations.
- Gathers and compiles statistical data and prepares reports of findings.
- Revises and develops forms; establishes procedures for their use and instructs others in their application.
- May attend public meetings representing the department and the County.
- Composes and proofreads correspondence and documents.
- Maintains inventory and recommends purchase of supplies.
- Maintains records and prepares reports as assigned; enters and retrieves information using data entry devices, as required.
- May gather information from the Recreation Council(s) in order to produce fliers for distribution, and submit facility requests.
- Assists with the daily operation of a community's Recreation Council programs and facilities including room set up and light custodial duties.
- Assists with the inspection of recreation facilities to ascertain that structures, areas, and equipment are safe, adequate, and functioning properly.
- May be asked to recruit and train volunteers.
- Works summer camps at the Edgewood Recreation & Community Center
- Other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Working knowledge of developing and conducting recreation programs
- Knowledge of recreation and administrative principles and practices
- Ability to develop procedures and forms
- Knowledge of, or the ability to learn terms, procedures, and operations relating to area of work.
- Ability to deal effectively with the public and with other employees and departments
- Ability to use Microsoft Office; to learn new software programs as needed; maintain record systems; to prepare analytical reports and to compile data;
- Ability to communicate effectively; both orally and in writing;
- Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, stand, or sit for prolonged periods of time;
- Ability to drive a County vehicle while carrying out some assignments, if applicable.
EDUCATION:
Possession of a high school or vocational-technical school diploma or a GED certificate.

Applicants may substitute a bachelor's degree in recreation or a related field for the required experience.
EXPERIENCE:
Four (4) years of experience (paid or voluntary) in one or more of the following areas -
- working with the public in a recreational environment (such as a sports coach, recreation council, or related capacity);
- working with the public in the planning and/or oversight of events (such as weddings, receptions, or related capacity);
- working with the public in a progressively responsible administrative support function (such as correspondence, answering inquiries, compiling and entry of data into a computer system, or related capacity).
LICENSE:
Possession of a valid Class "C" non-commercial driver's license with no more than three (3) points. Please be advised this position requires a valid driver's license. Your application will not be considered if you fail to include the full driver's license number on the electronic application.
Must have the ability to acquire First Aid and CPR/AED certification if not currently certified within the first month of employment.
