What are the responsibilities and job description for the SCHOOL CROSSING GUARD position at Harford County?
To provide for the safe passage of pedestrian traffic; to render aid and assistance, to ensure the smooth, safe movement of traffic; to provide advance warning to motorists of an intersection that is under the control of a crossing guard.
- Placement of warning devices at traffic control points.
- Stop vehicular traffic to allow for safe pedestrian passage.
- Render basic first aid to injured persons.
- Maintain orderly control of pedestrians at crossings.
- Report hazardous conditions at traffic control points.
- Attend meetings and required training programs.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Graduation from a high school recognized by the Maryland State Board of Education OR possession of a GED certificate recognized by the Maryland Board of Education.
- Valid Class D or Class C non-commercial driver's license with no more than three (3) points and a relatively clean driving record.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to act as a representative of the Sheriff's Office to the public.
- Working knowledge of uniform traffic control hand signals, basic first aid and pedestrian control techniques.
- Ability to communicate effectively; to read and write and speak English in a clear, articulate manner.
- Ability to comprehend and retain information received verbally or in writing.
- Ability to utilize senses of sight, hearing, smell, and feel to recognize things, conditions of danger and other factors.
- Ability to quickly and effectively respond to situations that may arise.
- Ability to maintain composure and demonstrate appropriate restraint in stressful situations while maintaining a professional demeanor.
- Ability to adapt to changes in working condition such as inclement weather, heavy pedestrian or traffic flows, last minute schedule changes.
- Ability to stand for extended periods of time under all conditions while maintaining mental alertness.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and superiors.
- Ability to accept supervision, criticism.
- Ability to use tact and resourcefulness in coping with varied problems and situations.
- Ability to interact effectively and responsibly with persons of cultural, ethnic, religious and economic backgrounds.
- Ability to work unsupervised.
Selected Candidate:
- Must be 18 years of age or older and U.S. citizen.
- Must pass comprehensive background investigation and criminal record check; medical exam and drug/alcohol screening; and polygraph exam.
- Must provide handwriting sample for review.
- Must appear before and receive a favorable recommendation from Oral Interview Board.
- Must have reliable transportation and telephone communication since this is an on-call position with a possibility of a full-time status if position becomes available.
- Must possess a history and exhibit the characteristics of honesty, reliability, integrity, and interpersonal skills. Any criminal conviction(s) and/or arrest(s) may be grounds for disqualification.
