SCHOOL CROSSING GUARD

To provide for the safe passage of pedestrian traffic; to render aid and assistance, to ensure the smooth, safe movement of traffic; to provide advance warning to motorists of an intersection that is under the control of a crossing guard.

1. Placement of warning devices at traffic control points.
2. Stop vehicular traffic to allow for safe pedestrian passage.
3. Render basic first aid to injured persons.
4. Maintain orderly control of pedestrians at crossings.
5. Report hazardous conditions at traffic control points.
6. Attend meetings and required training programs.
7. Performs other duties as assigned. 

1. Graduation from a high school recognized by the Maryland State Board of Education OR possession of a GED certificate recognized by the Maryland Board of Education.
2. Valid Class D or Class C non-commercial driver's license with no more than three (3) points and a relatively clean driving record.   

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

1. Ability to act as a representative of the Sheriff's Office to the public.
2. Working knowledge of uniform traffic control hand signals, basic first aid and pedestrian control techniques.
3. Ability to communicate effectively; to read and write and speak English in a clear, articulate manner.
4. Ability to comprehend and retain information received verbally or in writing.
5. Ability to utilize senses of sight, hearing, smell, and feel to recognize things, conditions of danger and other factors.
6. Ability to quickly and effectively respond to situations that may arise.
7. Ability to maintain composure and demonstrate appropriate restraint in stressful situations while maintaining a professional demeanor.
8. Ability to adapt to changes in working condition such as inclement weather, heavy pedestrian or traffic flows, last minute schedule changes.
9. Ability to stand for extended periods of time under all conditions while maintaining mental alertness.
10. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and superiors.
11. Ability to accept supervision, criticism.
12. Ability to use tact and resourcefulness in coping with varied problems and situations.
13. Ability to interact effectively and responsibly with persons of cultural, ethnic, religious and economic backgrounds.
14. Ability to work unsupervised.

1. Must be 18 years of age or older and U.S. citizen.
2. Must pass comprehensive background investigation and criminal record check; medical exam and drug/alcohol screening; and polygraph exam.
3. Must provide handwriting sample for review.
4. Must appear before and receive a favorable recommendation from Oral Interview Board.
5. Must have reliable transportation and telephone communication since this is an on-call position with a possibility of a full-time status if position becomes available.
6. Must possess a history and exhibit the characteristics of honesty, reliability, integrity, and interpersonal skills. Any criminal conviction(s) and/or arrest(s) may be grounds for disqualification.
