What are the responsibilities and job description for the Registration/Patient Care Technician position at Harlan County Heath System?
HCHS is seeking a Registration/Patient Care Technician to join our team.
This position will work three 12-hour shifts, rotating holidays, and weekends with other staff.
Position Summary:
Serves as the first point of contact with patients and their families, completing patient registration, operating the switchboard, and assisting patients and their families as needed. Provides direct and indirect patient care activities under direct supervision. Assists patients with activities of daily living, providing personal care, comfort, and assistance as necessary.
Essential Job Functions:
Patient Registration and Data Entry
- Enters accurate patient financial and demographic data into the information system.
- Photocopies essential financial and demographic information, including insurance cards and driver’s license.
- Compiles and distributes patient registration information to appropriate departments.
- Coordinates insurance information with Utilization Review.
- Initiates precertification notification to insurance companies when required.
Verification and Communication
- Verifies patient statistics and investigates discrepancies in admission and discharge dates in collaboration with other departments.
- Answers incoming telephone calls and transfers them to appropriate individuals and/or departments.
- Assists nursing and medical staff in placing outgoing calls related to patient treatment and/or transfer.
- Responds to emergency calls following established protocols.
Supplies and Equipment Maintenance
- Maintains knowledge of equipment and supply locations.
- Restocks supplies and reports equipment needing repairs.
- Cleans and stores equipment when no longer needed.
Documentation and Reporting
- Documents patient assessments, interventions, and outcomes.
- Completes end-of-shift documentation and maintains records for quality improvement efforts.
- Follows approved shift report format when communicating patient information.
Safety and Infection Control
- Utilizes proper body mechanics and lifting techniques to minimize injury risk.
- Implements infectious disease controls, including proper handwashing and glove use.
- Ensures safe handling of hazardous materials and disposal of sharps.
Additional Responsibilities
- Assists staff in ER with basic patient care needs
- Taking specimen to the lab
- Getting supplies
- Performs admission, transfer, and dismissal procedures for patients.
- Promotes and ensures patient and staff safety in all aspects of responsibilities.
- Communicates effectively with patients, families, and team members.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education and/or Experience:
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
No supervisory responsibilities.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to sit for extended periods of time while working at a computer or desk.
- Regularly required to talk or hear, and frequently required to use hands to type, handle, or reach for office tools and equipment.
- May occasionally be required to stand, walk, and lift or move items up to 20 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate, typical of an office setting.

- Primarily works in an office setting.

- May occasionally visit other areas within the facility or external locations for meetings or other work-related activities.

- All Harlan County Health System users will be given access to the organizations network to the level required to perform their specific duties. Some users will require access to job specific systems, the authorization of these systems will be granted but the department director or the IT.
