Location: In office 5 days a week, with 14 work from home/flex days a year. (Harlem, NYC)  

Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm EST

Compensation: Competitive hourly rate ( $140,000 - $160,000.00 annually, depending on experience)

Reports to: COO

 

Job Summary

 

We’re looking for a proven leader to take full ownership of our financial operations. If you’re a strategic, results-driven Controller with a track record of leading high-performance teams and implementing financial improvements, we want to talk to you.

 

In this role, you will not just oversee accounting functions—you will drive financial strategy, improve reporting accuracy, and optimize processes to support business growth. You’ll also be client-facing, presenting financial insights and creative solutions to boards, investors, and stakeholders.

 

This is a leadership role for someone who is decisive, proactive, and thrives in a fast-paced environment where financial clarity and operational efficiency are key.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

Financial Oversight & Accounting

 

  • Oversee all accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, and financial reporting.
  • Manage property accounting functions, including tracking multiple properties' revenue, expenses, and financial performance. Manage financial health across multiple properties.
  • Own the financial reporting process—ensure timely, accurate financial statements, budgets, and forecasts to help support decision-making.
  • Implement and enforce strict internal controls to safeguard company and client assets.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax regulations, financial best practices, and company policies.

 

Cash Flow & Risk Management

 

  • Manage cash flow, financial planning, and risk management strategies.
  • Implement and maintain internal controls to safeguard company assets.
  • Coordinate with auditors, tax professionals, and regulatory agencies to ensure financial accuracy and compliance.

 

Process Optimization & Financial Strategy

  • Identify inefficiencies and implement improvements to streamline accounting operations, driving company and client success. Working closely with leadership.
  • Leverage accounting software (Yardi, AppFolio, or similar) to enhance reporting and streamline financial processes.
  • Meet with board members and internal stakeholders to review budgets, financial reports, and strategic financial planning.

 

Leadership & Team Management

 

  • Lead and develop a high-performing accounting team—driving accountability, efficiency, and ownership.
  • Set clear SLAs (Service Level Agreements) to ensure financial data is delivered on time and with precision.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement, strategic thinking, and operational excellence.
  • Work closely with property managers, executive leadership, and external financial professionals to align financial goals with operational objectives.

 

Client-Facing & Board Presentations

 

  • Serve as the financial expert in board meetings—be comfortable and confident in presenting financials, answering questions, and recommending strategic solutions to boards and Property Managers.
  • Collaborate with property managers and executive teams to align financial goals with operational needs.
  • Proactively anticipate financial challenges and develop creative solutions to support growth and profitability.

 

Qualifications & Requirements

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or related field (Preference to candidates who have completed their CPA).
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of accounting experience, preferably in property management, real estate, or related industries.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, and regulatory compliance.
  • Proficiency in accounting software (Yardi, AppFolio, or similar systems) and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to lead a team and communicate effectively with stakeholders.
  • High level of integrity and attention to detail in financial reporting and compliance.
