What are the responsibilities and job description for the Psychiatric Medical Student position at Harmony?
We are seeking a motivated and compassionate Psychiatric Medical Student to join our multidisciplinary mental health team at Harmony. This role provides an excellent opportunity for medical students to gain hands-on clinical experience in psychiatric care while under the supervision of licensed mental health providers. You will be involved in patient evaluations, treatment planning, and learning the application of psychiatric principles in a real-world setting.
Key Responsibilities:
- Patient Assessment: Assist with initial psychiatric assessments under supervision, including patient histories, mental status examinations, and risk assessments.
- Clinical Documentation: Document patient interactions, diagnoses, treatment plans, and progress notes in the medical record system according to institutional guidelines. (Site dependent)
- Collaborative Care: Work closely with medical providers, clinical psychologists, social workers, and staff to provide comprehensive patient care.
- Case Discussions: Participate in case conferences, rounds, and treatment planning meetings with interdisciplinary teams.
- Psychopharmacology & Therapy: Observe and participate in the administration of psychotropic medications, as well as therapy sessions including individual, group, or family therapy (as applicable).
- Patient Education: Assist in providing education to patients and their families about mental health conditions, medications, and available community resources.

Required Qualifications:
- Current enrollment in an accredited PA, NP, or medical school program
- Basic understanding of medical and psychiatric terminology.
- Familiarity with psychiatric diagnostic criteria (DSM-5) and common psychiatric disorders.
- Ability to communicate effectively and empathically with patients, families, and healthcare teams.
- Strong commitment to learning and professional development.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous exposure to clinical rotations in psychiatry (not required but beneficial).
- Experience working in a healthcare setting (volunteer, research, or clinical internships).
- Interest in pursuing psychiatry as a career.
Learning Objectives:
- Develop a deep understanding of psychiatric disorders, treatment modalities, and the biopsychosocial model of care.
- Gain direct experience in diagnosing and managing mental health conditions in diverse patient populations.
- Strengthen communication and interpersonal skills while working in a clinical environment.
- Enhance clinical reasoning and decision-making abilities under supervision.
Work Environment:
This position will be based in an outpatient clinic, offering potential for inpatient rounds as well. You will have the opportunity to interact with a diverse patient population, including those with mood disorders, anxiety, psychotic disorders, substance use disorders, and neurocognitive disorders.
