POSITION SUMMARY

Job Description Summary:

This is paraprofessional work in providing foreign language interpreting services to clients for the agency. An employee in this position will provide interpreting services for non-English speaking Hispanic clients in all services and income maintenance programs.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsibilities and Duties:


  • Employees in the position ensure that all services, communications, documentation, etc. provided by the agency are translated in Spanish as mandated by law, program guidelines, or needs.
  • Work involves providing verbal and written interpretation of all information shared between staff and clients.
  • Employees will assist in interviews with non-English speaking Hispanic population to interpret and gather information needed for both services and income maintenance programs.
  • Employees will interview and interpret for applicants or any non-English speaking Hispanic individuals requesting any assistance or information from the agency.
  • Employees will assist with interpretation of policies, regulations, and instructions from manuals on work procedures.
  • Employees may make home visits as deemed necessary
  • Employees may serve as a point of contact for non-English speaking Hispanic individuals to ensure all services requested are provided to clients.
  • Employees will assist clients to ensure all appropriate services are determined, offered, received or given.

This position may also be required to perform any other duties assigned by the Supervisor, Program Manager or Director in order to meet the agency needs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


  • Employees must have considerable knowledge of the methods, procedures and policies of Harnett County and the agency.
  • Ability to interpret and translate all verbal information and written materials in English and Spanish.
  • Knowledge of ethics of interpreting.
  • Ability to assess communication skill level of client and exercise judgment in determining services to be rendered.
  • Ability to understand and interpret information in various dialects of the language.
  • Significant knowledge of the program area, regulations, policies, procedures etc.
  • Significant knowledge of the economic, social, cultural, environmental and education stresses affecting clients.

Education/Certification:

High School or GED and one year of experience in interpreting and translating English and the required foreign language in a setting that requires knowledge of the programs or services.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

Work Environment/Location/Physical Demands:

The caseworker’s physical work location will be at 311 Cornelius Harnett Boulevard, Lillington NC. Work space will be provided with regular office equipment such as a copy machine, calculator, computer, and other supplies. The physical effort required in this job is the same that is required in any office job. This caseworker will use close visual attention and mental concentration with talking with clients/applicants and accurately recording the information received. Employees will make home / work site visits. Employees are subject to working with agitated clients, heavy workloads, and compressed timeframes. Clients may at times become agitated, verbally abusive due to the extreme situations or their emotional problems, but generally physical harm is unlikely on an ongoing basis.
