The parole and probation officer is responsible for overseeing offenders placed on probation and post-prison supervision. They interact with offenders daily to monitor compliance with court and parole board orders. They will make referrals to services and provide coaching as appropriate and implement sanctions as needed.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Supervise and manage a general or specialized caseload of adult felony and misdemeanor offenders on probation, parole, and post-prison supervision.

Conduct initial intake when offenders are placed on supervision. Conduct assessment interviews to determine the risk to reoffend and criminogenic needs. Develop case plans to assist offenders in completing and complying with conditions of supervision. Monitor satisfaction of offenders’ obligation to victims, including restitution payments and no-contact conditions, and respond to victims’ concerns or inquiries. Conduct home visits. Conduct urinalysis or oral swab drug tests as needed.

Assess, counsel, and refer to mental health, substance abuse treatment, community service work, employment services, support groups, sex offender treatment, domestic violence treatment, and any other social service agency as appropriate. Regularly coordinate with treatment and service providers for progress and to ensure offenders are receiving the necessary services and interventions.

Prepare multiple reports including probation violation reports, modification and special information reports to the Court, early termination, and earned discharge reports. Maintain accurate client records, documenting contacts.

Impose sanctions or interventions, and/or arrest offenders as a result of violations.

Prepare for and testify in court hearings related to the offender’s supervision.

Perform field investigations for release plans and transfer requests (both inter-county and interstate).

Conduct searches of offenders’ persons, residences, property and vehicles when necessary.

Responds to emergency situations and crisis calls on a 24-hour basis at the request of law enforcement (on-call); responds to community concerns regarding threats, violations, and inquiries.

Access CJIS/LEDS to enter, modify, and retrieve offender information. Accesses OECI to retrieve court documents and restitution information.

Participate in internal staff meetings and statewide network meetings. Engage in continuous training to stay updated on best practices and legal requirements.

Carry firearm issued by the department in the performance of their duties.

May be assigned special projects or required to assist with special requests from the director or sheriff.

Qualifications & Requirements

Education and Experience

Preferred: Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree in Corrections, Criminal Justice, Social Services, or Psychology or any satisfactory combination of experience and training that demonstrates possession of the required knowledge and skills.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of office practices and procedures, including operation of office equipment. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office and data entry.

Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Special Requirements

At least 21 years of age at the time of employment.

Must be able to be certified as a Parole and Probation Officer by the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training within 18 months.

Current CJIS/LEDS Certification OR must be able to obtain within three months of employment.

Must pass a thorough background investigation and psychological evaluation.

Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain a valid Oregon driver's license and acceptable driving record throughout the course of employment.
