The Loader Backhoe Operator at Harper Brothers Construction, LLC is responsible for operating backhoes and loader equipment to support various utility construction and excavation projects. The primary duties include digging trenches, moving materials, loading and unloading trucks, and ensuring that the equipment is in proper working condition. The Loader Backhoe Operator will work closely with the crew to ensure that all tasks are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project specifications.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Equipment Operation: Safely and efficiently operate backhoe loaders and other heavy equipment on construction sites, including tasks such as digging trenches, lifting materials, moving soil, and loading/unloading trucks.
- Site Preparation: Assist in preparing the site for construction by using the backhoe to move soil, rocks, and other materials, ensuring the job site is ready for utility installation or other projects.
- Trenching and Excavation: Dig trenches and excavate materials as required for utility installation, foundation work, or other construction tasks. Ensure excavation is completed according to project specifications and safety guidelines.
- Material Handling: Use the backhoe to load and unload materials such as dirt, gravel, concrete, and other construction materials, helping to move materials to and from job sites as needed.
- Maintenance and Equipment Care: Conduct daily inspections and basic maintenance on the backhoe and other equipment, ensuring that all machinery is in safe working condition. Report any malfunctions or issues to the Equipment Manager or supervisor for repair.
- Safety Compliance: Follow all safety protocols, including wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), conducting pre-operation safety checks, and adhering to all OSHA guidelines. Report any unsafe working conditions or practices to the foreman or supervisor.
- Team Collaboration: Work closely with other crew members, including laborers, foremen, and operators, to ensure that the work is performed efficiently and in alignment with project goals.
- Job Site Organization: Keep the work site organized and clean, ensuring equipment, materials, and tools are properly stored and easily accessible to enhance efficiency.
- Site Communication: Communicate effectively with the team, supervisors, and other personnel to ensure coordination and smooth operation of the project. Follow all instructions from the foreman or project manager.
- Traffic Control: Assist with traffic control efforts if required, ensuring that the work zone is properly marked and that work activities do not pose a risk to nearby workers or the public.
- Perform Additional Tasks: Assist with any other tasks related to the project as required, including backfilling trenches, compacting soil, and general labor duties.
Qualifications:
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years of experience operating backhoes and other heavy machinery in construction, excavation, or utility installation.
- Skills:
- Proficiency in operating backhoe loaders and other heavy construction equipment.
- Strong understanding of safety regulations and operational procedures for heavy machinery.
- Ability to read and interpret basic blueprints and construction plans.
- Ability to work in varying weather conditions and physically demanding environments.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot equipment issues.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team.
- Certifications:
- Valid driver’s license and a clean driving record.
- Relevant equipment certifications (e.g., backhoe operation) are preferred.
- Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift and move heavy materials up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to sit, stand, bend, and kneel for extended periods.
- Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, etc.).
- Ability to operate heavy machinery safely and efficiently under varying conditions.
