Job Summary:
Harper Brothers Construction is seeking a highly experienced Safety Coordinator to assist with the company’s safety programs, policies, and initiatives. The Safety Coordinator will be responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of all employees, contractors, and subcontractors on job sites and in the workplace. The ideal candidate will be highly knowledgeable in construction safety, OSHA regulations, and industry best practices, with a proven ability to implement and enforce effective safety strategies.
The Safety Coordinator is responsible for ensuring that all construction activities are conducted safely and in compliance with regulatory standards. This role involves monitoring job sites, enforcing safety procedures, conducting safety training, and maintaining proper safety documentation. The Safety Coordinator works closely with management, project managers, and workers to promote a culture of safety and minimize the risk of accidents, injuries, and health hazards on construction sites.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and Implement Safety Plans:
Create and enforce construction-specific safety plans, ensuring that the site complies with OSHA regulations, local safety laws, and company policies.
- Conduct Safety Inspections and Audits:
Perform regular safety inspections on construction sites to identify hazards, assess risks, and ensure compliance with safety protocols. Provide recommendations for corrective actions to address any issues found.
- Monitor Daily Safety Operations:
Oversee daily operations on construction sites to ensure that safety guidelines are being followed, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), machinery, and tools.
- Safety Training and Orientation:
Conduct regular safety training and orientation for new hires, subcontractors, and employees, covering topics such as hazard identification, emergency response, proper PPE use, and safe work practices.
- Investigate Accidents and Near Misses:
Lead investigations into any accidents, injuries, or near-misses on construction sites. Document incidents, analyze root causes, and implement corrective actions to prevent future occurrences.
- Maintain Safety Records and Documentation:
Keep accurate records of safety inspections, accident reports, safety training sessions, and compliance audits. Ensure all necessary safety documentation is submitted to relevant authorities as required.
- Promote a Safety Culture:
Foster a positive safety culture on the construction site by encouraging open communication about safety concerns, recognizing safe behaviors, and providing safety leadership to all workers.
- Ensure Compliance with Regulations:
Ensure that all construction activities are in compliance with local, state, and federal safety laws and regulations (e.g., OSHA standards). Keep up-to-date with any changes in safety laws or regulations and ensure the site is in full compliance.
- Emergency Response Preparedness:
Develop and implement emergency response procedures for construction sites, including fire safety, evacuation plans, and first-aid measures. Conduct drills and ensure that workers are trained to handle emergencies effectively.
- Report to Management:
Regularly report to project managers and other key stakeholders on safety performance, incidents, and improvements needed. Provide recommendations for enhancing safety measures and procedures on site.
Qualifications:
- Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; a degree or certification in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health, or a related field is preferred.
- Certifications such as OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety, First Aid/CPR, or other relevant safety certifications are strongly preferred.
- Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in safety coordination, preferably in the construction industry.
- Knowledge and Skills:
- In-depth knowledge of construction safety regulations (OSHA, ANSI, etc.), industry standards, and best practices.
- Strong ability to identify and address safety hazards on construction sites.
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, to effectively train employees and interact with management.
- Ability to work collaboratively with construction workers, subcontractors, and other stakeholders to ensure a safe work environment.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to perform physical tasks such as walking, climbing ladders, and performing site inspections in various weather conditions.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and wear appropriate PPE, including hard hats, safety glasses, and protective footwear.
- Ability to work in noisy, hazardous, or outdoor environments typical of construction sites.
Work Environment:
This position involves frequent visits to construction job sites, where exposure to noise, heavy equipment, and construction materials is common. The role requires flexibility to work in various outdoor and indoor environments, with varying levels of physical activity.
