Responsible for facilitating access to courses, programs, services, activities, and facilities for students with disabilities. The Access Advocate develops programs and workshops to offer students with disabilities with extracurricular opportunities to develop critical skills. The Access Advocate will work with the Academic Advisors to maintain an inclusive practice of academic advising to students with disabilities. The Access Advocate engages with students, faculty and the management to improve the accessibility of campus through the delivery of programs and services that reframe disability and promote inclusive design.

Meets with students to identify barriers to full participation in the curricular and co-curricular environments and determine appropriate access and accommodations, reviewing additional sources of information as needed.

Coordinates the provision of access and reasonable accommodations in consultation with students, faculty and staff.

Creates programs and workshops that enhances the leadership, self-advocacy, and interpersonal skills of students with disabilities.

Works collaboratively with other departments on campus to create opportunities for educational training and programming to create a more inclusive and accessible campus environment for students with disabilities.

Responsible for promoting the Universal Design for Learning philosophy on campus with a goal to ensure that educational programming and courses are readily accessible for students with disabilities.

Works collaboratively with the Academic Advisors to ensure that the students with disabilities receive an educational plan that closely aligns with their interests and opportunities.

Works with the Division of Student Affairs to foster an increased engagement of students with disabilities in student life activities and events.

Serves on the Area of Interest teams as an ADS representative.

Maintains appropriate, accurate records and case notes in a timely manner on Accessible Information Management (AIM) and other relevant software programs.

Functions within guidelines of Student Development philosophy and toward the fulfillment of departmental and institutional goals.

Works with other campus academic and student support services departments in appropriate referrals for students’ needs.

Represents ADS at meetings and serves on campus committees when appropriate or assigned.

Maintains professional competence in the disability field by keeping current on research, trends, and practices in the field.

Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of ADS. Each Access Advocate may have specific programming duties and expectations assigned.

Education : Bachelor’s Degree or higher with an emphasis on Disability Services, rehabilitation, Social Work, Special Education, or related field. Master’s degree preferred.

Experience : Minimum of 3 years of working with adults with disabilities in a postsecondary setting or relevant setting. Must have in-depth knowledge of Americans with Disabilities Act Amendment Act and other relevant disability laws. Must have experience in interpreting disability documentations and providing reasonable accommodations for students with different kinds of disabilities. Excellent interpersonal, conflict resolution, and communication skills. Proficiency in American Sign Language is preferred.

Salary : $29 - $35
