    Position Title : Teacher for Students in a Functional Secondary Classroom

    Department : Special Education

    Reports To : Principal

    Summary :

    Under the direction of the school principal, the special education teacher plans and provides for appropriate learning experiences for students with multiple disability eligibility within a self-contained classroom and in a variety of educational settings. The person in this position is responsible for creating a flexible program and learning environment that provides specialized instruction for students with multiple disabilities, such that the students benefit from the general education curriculum to the greatest extent possible when supported with supplemental aides, accommodations, and other needed support.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Teach District-approved curriculum through both direct and inquiry-based instruction.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively within multiple departments and grade levels.
  • Employ special educational strategies and techniques as appropriate during instruction to improve the development of sensory- and perceptual-motor skills, language, cognition, and memory.
  • Demonstrates ability to use data to drive instructional decisions including the implementation of intervention time.
  • Able to use effective classroom management skills to develop positive working relationships with students and a productive learning environment.
  • Teach socially acceptable behavior, as determined by the students’ individualized education programs (IEPs) by employing techniques in an overall positive behavioral support system.
  • Effectively apply and integrate technology to support meaningful teaching and successful student learning.
  • Articulate to students their learning objectives and the reasons for their importance.
  • Modify the general education curriculum for students with disabilities based upon a variety of instructional techniques and technologies.
  • Develop plans for effective communication, monitoring, and follow-up of students in inclusive classroom settings.
  • Provide crisis intervention, as needed, for students in inclusive classrooms.
  • Confer with parents, administrators, testing specialists, social workers, and other professionals to develop individualized education programs (IEPs) and transition plans designed to promote students’ educational, physical, and social / emotional development.
  • Evaluate pupils’ academic and social growth, keep appropriate records, and prepare progress reports and report cards.
  • Maintains accurate records in a manner consistent with state and federal law as required by the District, to include student accommodations / modifications as specified in student IEPs.
  • Communicate frequently with parents and guardians by such means as conferences, newsletters, notes, telephone calls, and email – both during and outside the school day.
  • Participate in continual professional growth opportunities that are aligned with school and District priorities.
  • Participates in district-level staff meetings, in-service activities, staff development / special programs, school improvement teams, and planning committees as appropriate to the assignment.
  • Represent the Harper Creek Community Schools in an affirmative manner in the community.
  • Performs such other tasks as may from time to time be assigned by the supervisor.
  • Supervisory Responsibilities :

    Supervises classroom, students, paraeducators, classroom aides, and volunteers

    Education and / or Experience

  • Must have a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree
  • Prefer someone who has experience with high-school-aged students; experience writing and implementing Transition Plans; and / or experience with Work-Based Learning
  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

    Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with appropriate endorsement(s) in the area of Special Education

    Language Skills

    Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, staff, and the general public.

    Mathematical Skill s

    Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

    Reasoning Ability :

    Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

    Other Skills and Abilities :

    Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program; ability to plan and implement lessons based on department and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers, and parents; skill in oral and written communication. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all District requirements and Board of Education policies.
