What are the responsibilities and job description for the Middle School Activity Specialist/Teacher/Musician - African Drumming- Queens position at Harriman After School Programs?
SUMMARY:
We are seeking a passionate and skilled African Drumming Specialist to introduce students to the rhythms, culture, and techniques of traditional African drumming. Lead engaging and interactive African drumming sessions for middle school students. Teach basic and advanced drumming techniques, rhythms, and cultural significance. Foster a positive, inclusive, and encouraging learning environment. Work with program staff to integrate drumming into broader lessons on culture, teamwork, and self-expression. Provide guidance on rhythm coordination, hand drumming techniques, and group performance. Ensure proper care and maintenance of drumming instruments.
Monday, Wednesday Friday -2:00pm - 5:30pm
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Ensure the safety of children
- Able to engage all children in assigned activities, so that no child is left behind
- Develop weekly activity lesson plans in area(s) of specialty
- Ready and prepared to facilitate purposeful activities that foster the development of new skills in children, while reinforcing skills/information previously taught
- Assist in all program activities, which could include supervising children, facilitating dismissal, attending field trips that might be outside of regular hours, hosting special events and other program activities
- Works closely with the Group Leader, engaging them in the lesson plan development
- Attend all meetings, training workshops, and special events, which might be after regular hours
- Complete 15 hours of professional development each calendar year
- Conduct yourself as a positive role model
- Knowledge of DYCD and DOH mandates
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Appropriate training or certification in their area of specialty; college students welcome; college degree preferred
- Minimum of one to three years experience working with middle school-aged children
- Exceptional group management, problem-solving and conflict resolution skills
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Competency in youth development and child care
- Ability to create interactive academic and/or enrichment activities that are age-appropriate
- Genuine enthusiasm for developing professional skills through training opportunities and field practice
- Ability to work as part of a team within a school community
- Ability to communicate and work effectively and respectfully with other employees
- Reliable and cooperative
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
- College degree preferred, college students welcome

Salary Range: $20.00 - $25.00 per hour
