About Harris County Flood Control District:
The Flood Control District has the mission to reduce the risk of flooding in Harris County, the third most populated county in the United States, with a population in excess of 4.7 million, including the City of Houston, the nation’s fourth largest city. The Flood Control District has jurisdiction over the primary stormwater facilities in the county, which consist of approximately 1,500 channels totaling nearly 2,500 miles in length, as well as more than 60 regional stormwater detention basins, totaling more than 10,000 acres and several wetlands mitigation banks including Greens bayou.What you will do at Harris County Flood Control District:
Harris County Flood Control District is seeking qualified candidates for the role of Equipment Operator.
Reporting to the Maintenance Construction Field Supervisor, the Equipment Operator is responsible for operating various pieces of small sized construction equipment, small engines, attachments, power tools and hand tools to construct, repair or perform maintenance to channels /bayous within Harris County.
Essential Functions and Duties:
- Perform manual work in preparing surfaces and mixing concrete for concrete pour.
- Operate small sized construction equipment, small engines, attachments, power tools and hand tools for channel and bayou maintenance.
- Maintain, clean, and prepare construction site to eliminate possible hazards.
- Assist with the evacuation of other equipment that have become disabled.
- Remove debris and/or selective vegetation from channel rights of way and de-snag channel bottoms.
- Clear trees, rocks, and any other large obstacles from the County rights-of-way.
- Prune limbs for access of equipment.
- Flag traffic to ingress and egress jobsites. Act as a spotter for drivers/operators.
- Stock and inventory County trucks, trailers and equipment with tools and materials.
- Wash County vehicles and equipment. Clean shop, fleet parking area, and laydown yard.
- Assist with constructing forms, placing rebar, pouring, finishing concrete structures, building, or repairing manholes and inlets, and installation of corrugated metal pipe outfalls.
- Install signs, gates, and bollards.
- Load and unload equipment and construction materials on/off trailers and rollback trucks.
- Inspect County equipment and vehicles for safety and compliance before operation. Drive and operate County vehicles and equipment.
- May perform other duties that can be added or changed as the course and scope of the job directs.

Education:
- High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent
Experience:
- One (1) year experience operating small sized equipment.
- One (1) year experience as a laborer.
Licensure:
- Valid Class "C" Texas Driver’s License.
- Must have or obtain a Forklift certification within 90 days of employment.
- Good verbal & written communication skills.
- Can effectively communicate with coworkers and the public.
- Must be able to read and understand written instructions, maps, and be able to provide directions to District locations.
- Ability to work in an outdoor setting.
- Ability to work well with a team in a field environment.
- Can work independently with limited to no supervision.
- Familiar with Microsoft Outlook.

gasoline, oil, grease, diesel and other fuels and lubricants, snakes, wildlife, wasps, bees and other flying or walking
insects, aquatic bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms, and vibration or noise in excess of 85 decibels.
