Position Description



What you will do for Harris County Precinct 2:
Supervises beach and lifeguard programs. Under the direction of the Lifeguard Coordinator/Park Supervisor the Lead Lifeguard performs professional duties in ensuring performance for lifeguard functions. The Lead Lifeguard is expected to have adequate knowledge of the overall operations and facility amenities of the Department. The Lead Lifeguard is responsible for reporting to work in a timely manner and ready to serve. The Lead Lifeguard assists with planning, implementing, and supervising seasonal Lifeguards. Plan, train, assign and direct activities of assigned staff. May serve as the Manager on Duty (MOD), when Lifeguard Coordinator and/or full-time park staff is not on site. The MOD will be responsible for the operations of the facility, the staff working, the safety of customers and all matters as it relates to the daily operations. The MOD will notify the on duty supervisor and/or the on-call full time staff member of any issues and maintain communication so that support can be provided as needed.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Supervise activities at the beach and surrounding areas to prevent accidents.
  • Caution swimmers regarding unsafe practices and safety hazards, enforces and adheres to facility rules and regulations.
  • Respond quickly, intelligently, decisively and in accordance with established emergency and accident management procedures. Perform required rescues, extrications, first-aid, CPR/AED as required. Serve as the lead/primary rescuer during emergency situation.
  • Maintain excellent physical condition and attend/participate in all required staff meetings and in-service training sessions.
  • Properly stationed and equipped and ensure lifeguards are also properly stationed and equipped during their lifeguarding rotations, ensure lifeguards are scanning effectively, and ensure that lifeguards are hydrated and alert. Serve in the rotation as necessary to ensure minimum standards for lifeguards actively on duty are met.
  • Provide superb customer service to members, customers and guests. Also responsible for ensuring subordinate staff do the same.
  • Staff Management and appropriate recording-keeping as needed.

Requirements

Education/Certification:
  • High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent from an accredited educational institution.
  • Must have a valid American Red Cross Lifeguard Training or an equivalent lifeguard certification, along with CPR/AED and Open Water Guard certification.
    • If you don't already have these certifications and/or trainings, you'll need to obtain them within the first 30 days of being hired.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge and ability to evaluate water conditions at the beach to determine any potential dangers or hazards.
  • Ability to adjust programs as necessary to ensure the safety of the visitors and other staff.
  • Swimming proficiency and comfort in all types of water conditions.
  • Ability to judge and evaluate evolving dynamics of individuals participating in aquatic activities to immediately assess their capabilities and threats to their safety.
  • Knowledge of on-site protocols, operational procedures, and safety policies.
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques for providing on-site emergency medical services.
  • Ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information; includes receiving assignments and/or directions from supervisors. Includes the giving of directions, information and/or instructions to others.
  • Ability to tactfully and effectively interact with the public and with co-workers.
  • Ability to apply principles of emergency medicine and common sense understanding to carry out detailed and involved written or oral instructions; to deal with problems involving variables in or from standardized situations; to make independent judgments in the absence of supervisor.
  • Ability to comprehend and interpret received information.

Experience:
  • Two (2) years of beach lifeguarding experience (preferred)

Work Environment and Physical Demands:
  • Must be able to sit for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to remain alert and perform rigorous physical activity for long periods of time, with little rest and under adverse weather conditions.
  • Must be able to work for sustained periods of exposure to outside atmospheric conditions.
  • Must be able to see and hear sufficiently well to identify and rescue troubled swimmers within a designated swimming area.
  • Must be able to exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, or in excess of 25 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Must be able to ascend or descend ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs or hands and arms.
  • Must be able to maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, crouching or running on narrow, slippery or erratically moving surfaces, or when in water.
  • Must be able to bend downward and forward by bending spine at the waist, requiring full use of the lower extremities and back muscles.
  • Must be able to bend legs at knees to come to rest on knee(s).
  • Must be able to bend body downward and forward by bending legs and spine.
  • Must be able to move about on hands and knees or hands and feet.
  • Must be able to reach, extending hand(s) in any direction.
  • Must be able to handle, seize, hold, grasp, turn or otherwise work with hand(s).
  • Must be able to finger, pick, pinch or otherwise work primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand or arm.

Employment may be contingent on passing a drug screen and meeting other standards.
