What are the responsibilities and job description for the Official Court Reporter position at Harris County?
Under minimal supervision, responsible for documenting transcripts related to conversations, speeches, legal proceedings and other legal events held in a County Court.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Document and provide legal transcripts.
- Create word-for-word transcriptions.
- Accurately documents names of the people and the places involved.
- Assist trial attorneys and judges to organize and search for information from official records.
- Organize and manage transcripts and documents prepared for submission upon request.
- Perform other administrative duties as assigned.
- Adhere strictly to the Code of Judicial Conduct as promulgated by the Supreme Court of Texas.
- Assist the court or court coordinator during docket call when instructed by the judge.
- Perform court coordinator duties in the coordinator’s absence when court is not in trial.

Certification:
Active Court Reporting Certificate.
Completion of a Court Reporting Certification Program approved by the National Court Reporters Association.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Recording a minimum of 225 WPM.
- General working knowledge of applicable County Courts Administration structure, policies and procedures.
- Familiarity with different court reporting methods: Stenographic, electronic and voice writing.
- Excellent vocabulary and thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation.
- Ability to use transcribing equipment: Stenotype machine, Analog Tape Recorder.
- Ability to use related computer software packages (Microsoft Word, Outlook, Web Browser)
- Superb hearing and listening ability.
- Awareness of current events and business practices.
- Proficient in trial court as well as appellate procedures and legal terminology.
- Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with others within court and outside groups.
- Demonstrated competence to effectively present standard information in writing.
- Thorough knowledge of office methods, procedures and practices.
- Ability to use case management systems and related reports, dockets and lists.
