Park Naturalist Intern Overview:
Precinct 4 Forward Internship Program (P4FIP), is an 9-week paid summer internship for students with a passion for serving others.
We’ve designed our program to expose students to career opportunities with Harris County and apply what they have learned in the classroom to hands-on projects. P4FIP provides students the chance to bridge the gap between academic understanding and practical professional experience.
Interns will create a community to help support their personal and professional development throughout the summer as they launch their career. Interns will work with a mentor, form relationships with other interns, and engage our Senior Leadership Team.
The Park Naturalist Intern will assist with the implementation of daily activity programming, volunteer projects, and facility care. This position is also responsible for assisting in the implementation of interpretive educational programs, conducting outreach with park-goers, and more.
Park Naturalist Interns will be assigned to a work site, be it Kleb Woods Nature Preserve & Heritage Farm, or John Paul Landing Environmental Education Center, and will have the opportunity to work alongside experienced Park Naturalists. Upon site matching, the intern will be assigned a project that aligns with their degree and the internship site. Past projects include development of self-led trail activities, habitat improvement for ambassador animals and local wildlife, and development of invasive tree management plan.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Support and assist the Park Naturalists Team.
- Support the day-to-day operations such as educational programs, historical tours, nature center maintenance, public outreach, land management and more.
- Help create a friendly, open, and safe environment at Precinct 4 parks and facilities.
- Perform clerical duties such as answering telephones, maintaining files, and preparing documents.
- Assist in the creation and implementation of daily activity plans and nature center programs.
- Help to ensure the cleanliness of the nature center.
- Help maintain organized supplies and inventory.
- Familiarizes self with the facility schedule, procedures, and policies.
- Perform tasks both indoors and in the outdoor elements.
- Other related duties as assigned.

- Currently enrolled in an educational institution and working toward an an undergraduate degree
- Minimum GPA of 2.5
- Proficiency in Microsoft software applications, including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Share Point
- Must have a can do attitude and willingness to learn from others
- Must have strong written and verbal communications skills.
- Must possess working knowledge of computers and related software
- Must have an interest in Outdoor Education, Nature Center operations and/or Natural Resource Management.
- Proficient in the Microsoft suite of applications including Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and SharePoint.
- Demonstrate a high level of professionalism.
- Must be self-motivated and able to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Ability to take initiative and possess skills for problem solving and conflict resolution.
- Must be efficient and detail-oriented with a strong customer/constituent focus.
