Harris County Juvenile Probation Department is committed to the protection of the public, utilizing intervention strategies that are community-based, family-oriented, and least restrictive while emphasizing responsibility and accountability of both parent and child.
Under the authority of the Juvenile Board, the Educational Services Division offers educational programs for expelled students, delinquent youth in county-operated juvenile institutions, and students on probation seeking alternatives to traditional high school settings. The Juvenile Probation Department oversees all programs of Excel Academy Charter School, the Excel Academy Juvenile Justice Alternative Education Program, and The Opportunity Center.
All youth placed by the courts in Harris County juvenile detention and residential facilities receive educational services through the comprehensive academic program of Excel Academy Charter School. This program is funded by the Texas Education Agency, along with state and federal grants. Excel Academy Charter School offers both a regular school year program and a summer school program to help students continuously enhance their educational skills. The charter school emphasizes core academic curriculum, STAAR remediation, vocational education, and life skills. It also includes The Opportunity Center campus, which provides alternative education opportunities for currently and previously system-involved young people who seek an alternative to traditional high school.

Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develops and implements lesson plans with necessary accommodations that fulfill the requirements of the district's curriculum program, based on STAAR, for multiple grades and subjects.
- Maintains accurate student grades, work, and documentation related to special populations
- Creates a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social and emotional development of students
- Works cooperatively with special education teachers to modify curriculum as needed for special education students according to guidelines established in Individual Education Plans (IEP)
- Performs other duties as assigned
This position involves working with challenging youth where the use of crisis intervention and de-escalation strategies may be necessary to ensure the safety of both youth and staff.

- A valid Texas teaching certification in Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Social Studies, or related subject area
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and
- One (1) year of full-time teaching experience in an Accredited K-12 school working in grades six (6) or higher
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with at least twenty-four (24) college credit hours in Math, Physical Sciences, or Social Studies; and
- At least one (1) year of full-time paid experience working with at-risk youth.
PLUS
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- A valid driver's license (Texas upon hire) and possess and maintain liability insurance in at least the minimum amounts required by law.
Additional Requirements
- Upon receiving a conditional job offer, each applicant must undergo a criminal background check, a tuberculosis (TB) skin test, and a drug screening, as well as provide certified copies of their educational transcripts.
- Applicants must possess and maintain a valid Texas Driver's License (upon hire) and maintain liability insurance in at least the minimum amounts required by law.
- In the event of a declared public emergency by the county, staff may be reassigned to different duties, facilities, or placed under the supervision of another county department.
Certified copies of transcripts of educational credentials and/or college credits will be required during hiring process.
