POSITION SUMMARY:

The Histology Technician prepares cells and tissues from a variety of organs for Pathologist’s review and study.  Preparation of cells and tissue includes special staining techniques and special processing for which competency has been verified by a qualified person, i.e. the Pathologist.  Maintains in a timely manner, records of procedure performance, patient results, and quality control.  Maintains equipment in accordance with defined policies and protocols and logs preventive and remedial maintenance of equipment.  May participate in development of new procedures and changes to existing procedures. 

QUALIFICATIONS:

An Associate degree and previous experience in Histology working under the supervision of a pathologist is strongly desired.  

This position is one which on the job training can be given consideration. Training will be conducted under a board certified pathologist who will critique daily technical quality of any preparations. Prior experience in a medical setting is also desirable.  At minimum a high school diploma or equivalent is required. Staff members without a high school diploma or GED prior to 8/1/2014 will be grandfathered in. 

Candidates who have completed an accredited histology program and board eligible will also be considered. MLTs, CLTs, MTs, and CLS also qualify for this position.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

1.    Sufficient sight (includes color discrimination), manual dexterity and mobility to function efficiently in exercising job responsibilities.
2.    Stands or sits for long periods and walks short distances for most of work shifts.
3.    Uses tools and electrical devices to repair instruments and check equipment.
4.    Able to lift 20 lbs. as required to stock reagents and various lab supplies.
5.    Ability to effectively communicate (verbal and written).
6.    Ability to remain calm, continue to function effectively and develop priorities during stressful situations.
7.    Works scheduled hours that include weekends, holidays, and nights as necessary.
