HRCSB is seeking a hopeful, resilient, authentic, and qualified individual who is passionate about recovery and able to use their lived experience to support others on their recovery journey to join our team of Peer Recovery Specialists (PRS). Peer Recovery Specialists are individuals who identify themselves as having lived experience with a substance use and/or co-occurring disorder and are in active, long-term recovery. The role of a PRS is to provide non-clinical, person-centered, strength based, wellness focused and trauma informed support to aid an individual on their road to recovery. Preferred candidates are those who are insightful about their recovery, have a sense of humor, and can provide encouragement and hope without judgement. This position is part of our Peer Recovery Specialist team and will work in coordination with our Adult Outpatient team to provide services to adults with a substance use disorder and/or co-occurring disorder diagnosis and are navigating the legal system. The PRS will meet regularly with the Peer Program Coordinator and our team of HRCSB Peers for mutual support and guidance. This position is full-time with benefits.

The roll of the PRS is to provide non-clinical, person-centered, strengths based, wellness focused, and trauma informed support with helping to ensure the individual’s Recovery, Resiliency, and Wellness Plan aids an individual in living a meaningful and independent life in the community. Peer Recovery Specialists are individuals who identify themselves as having lived experience with mental health and/or substance use and are in active recovery. Preferred candidates are those who are insightful about their recovery and articulate their experience well to others. Successful Peer Recovery Specialists are able to offer encouragement and support without judgement. PRS will offer services in individual and group settings at the Agency and in the community. The position is part of our Community Mental Health Services team and will work in coordination with our Adult Outpatient team to provide services to adults with a substance use diagnosis and/or co-occurring disorder and are navigating the legal system. The PRS also meetings regularly with the team of HRCSB Peers and Peer Program Coordinator for mutual support and guidance. This position is hourly and may include occasional evening coverage.
- Models and coaches recovery behavior and skills for identified caseload of clients;
- Refers individuals to treatment and recovery support services with the agency and in the community as appropriate;
- Coordinates with Peer Program Coordinator, case managers, and other treatment team members to help address any barriers for clients so that they can achieve their stated goals;
- Supports clients in locating, and applying for, employment opportunities, educational programs, and housing as appropriate;
- May provide transportation for participants to program related appointments;
- Refers clients at risk for HIV infection, AIDS, TB, hepatitis, and STDs and other health concerns to appropriate agencies for testing and treatment;
- Assists with completing all data collection requirements for continued funding by DBHDS;
- Collects essential data, writes contact notes, and otherwise documents efforts and outcomes;
- Works collaboratively with community agencies as appropriate including criminal justice, law enforcement, Harrisonburg-Rockingham Housing Authority, the Department of Social Services, Child Protective Services, the Department of Rehabilitative Services, etc.;
- Maintains effective relationships with consumers based on courtesy, compassion, and respect;
- Maintains effective relationships with co-workers and community providers based on courtesy and respect;
- Maintains a current level of knowledge regarding substance use and mental health disorders and available resources;
- Assures compliance with Agency policy, client rights, and confidentiality.
- Makes effective use of available technology, including computers, e-mail, and voicemail in order to enhance customer service;
- Regular attendance is required;
- Performs duties as assigned consistent with established operational policies and procedures of the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Community Services Board.
