About The Position

The Clark County Department of Aviation is seeking qualified candidates to apply for the Automotive and Equipment Technician I/II position. This position works in conjunction with various Department of Aviation divisions, along with other technicians and specialists, to ensure that support vehicles and equipment continue to operate smoothly and efficiently for all airport activities. This position maintains, repairs, and overhauls automobiles, heavy and light truck and other vehicles, construction equipment, small gasoline engines, and stationary equipment. In addition, this position operates a variety of hand, power, and shop tools.

Automotive and Equipment Technician I: $24.07 - $37.36 Hourly

Automotive and Equipment Technician II: $26.05 - $40.33 Hourly

The Automotive and Equipment Technician I is a training underfill position, upon successful completion of the training program the successful candidate will be non-competitively promoted to Automotive and Equipment Technician II.

This examination will establish an Open Competitive Eligibility list to fill current and/or future vacancies that may occur within the next six (6) months at either level or may be extended as needed by Employee Services.

Employee Services reserves the right to call only the most qualified applicants to the selection process.

Minimum Requirements

Education and Experience:

Automotive and Equipment Technician I - Equivalent to graduation from high school AND three (3) years of full-time experience in automotive equipment services and repair work. Successful completion of a recognized apprenticeship in the automotive trade may be substituted for the three (3) years of required experience.

Automotive and Equipment Technician II - In addition to the above: Minimum of one (1) year of journey-level experience in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and/or heavy construction equipment. Additional experience as outlined above may be substituted for the apprenticeship program on a year for year basis. Attendance at a recognized trade school is desirable.

Qualifying education and experience must be clearly documented in the “Education” and “Work Experience” sections of the application. Do not substitute a resume for your application or write "see attached resume" on your application.

Working Conditions: Work extended shifts or be called back in emergency situations. Work with exposure to potentially hazardous fuels, oils and solvents.

Licensing and Certification: Must possess a valid Nevada Class C driver's license at time of appointment; specified positions may require a Class A license with endorsements required to road test and/or operate heavy duty vehicles and equipment.

Medical Examination: Employment is contingent upon the results of a physical examination performed by our examining physician.

Pre-Employment Drug Testing: Employment is contingent upon the results of a pre-employment drug examination.

Residency Requirement: Permanent employees must maintain a principal place of residency within the boundaries of Clark County and provide proof of compliance with Nevada motor vehicle registration and drivers' license laws within 90 days of employment.

Citizenship: Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Please note, Clark County does not provide H1B visa sponsorships or transfers for any employment positions.

Background Check: Employment with the Department of Aviation is contingent upon completion of an education/experience background investigation, a fingerprint-based criminal history record check processed by the FBI, and upon the ability to be granted a security badge as mandated by the Transportation Security Administration. Note: all prospective hires must present two original government issued ID's upon acceptance of job offer. Examples of acceptable ID's include a Passport, Driver's License or DMV issued ID, birth certificate, Social Security card, Voter Registration card, school issued ID with picture, etc.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Mobility to work in a typical shop or related maintenance setting, including operating typical trade test equipment, hand and power tools and standard office equipment; stamina to stand, walk and climb and to work in confined or awkward spaces for an extended period of time; strength to lift and maneuver materials and equipment weighing up to 70 pounds with proper equipment; vision to read printed materials; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen and hearing and speech to communicate in person or over a radio or telephone. Accommodation may be made for some of these physical demands for otherwise qualified individuals who require and request such accommodation.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Diagnoses and may perform major repairs and overhauls to both gasoline and diesel engines, involving inspection and replacement of broken or worn parts such as pistons, piston rings, valves, bearings, fittings and gaskets.
  • Diagnoses and repairs, cleans, adjusts and installs fuel, ignition, electrical, electronic and cooling systems involving repair and replacement of such parts as carburetors and fuel pumps, starter motors, distributors, generators, voltage regulators, wiring, switches, batteries, and radiators, thermostats and water pumps.
  • Diagnoses and repairs and overhauls power transmission systems including such parts as clutches, standard transmissions, differential units, front and rear axles, gears, bearings, universal joints and hydraulic units; diagnoses and repairs and adjusts steering mechanisms and other controls.
  • Road tests vehicles; drives trucks or equipment as required; inspects vehicles in the shop and field; smog checks and certifies vehicles. Installs and tests electrical systems in vehicles as necessary; modifies such systems as required.
  • Diagnoses and performs electrical, hydraulic and other repairs in the field.
  • Performs preventive maintenance work on construction equipment, heavy trucks, street sweepers, automobiles, light trucks and other equipment.
  • Reads and interprets manuals, drawings, and specifications; estimates labor, material and equipment and order parts required to complete assignments.
  • Diagnoses, repairs and maintains vehicle air brakes, hydraulic systems and associated power take-off equipment.
  • Observes safe work methods and utilizes safety equipment related to the work.
  • May road test and/or regularly operate heavy-duty vehicles and equipment.
  • Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit's service to its customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of a work team.
  • Uses and performs minor maintenance on hand, power and shop tools and test equipment related to the work.
  • Makes oral and written reports of work performed; completes forms and maintains accurate maintenance records using an automated fleet information system.
