Adult Education ESL Educator, Part-time
The Hartford Public Library is seeking a contracted individual to provide English language education for speakers of other languages. Classes are in-person offered mornings, evenings and Saturdays at our Downtown Library location at 500 Main Street, Hartford, CT.
Job Type: Contractual, grant-funded
Pay: $35 - $40/hour (dependent on experience) plus 30 minutes of paid prep time per class.
POSITION SUMMARY:
Teacher of English for Speakers of other Languages (TESOL)
The American Place at the Hartford Public Library operates its ESL program from September through June. Teachers plan and implement interactive lessons to teach basic English reading, writing, and communication skills to adult learners of English, with the goal of increasing their self-sufficiency in work, family, and community life; integrate technology, civics, and workplace activities; and, maintain accurate daily records of attendance.
Skills & Knowledge
- Demonstrated experience designing and using student-centered, interactive lesson plans that demonstrate communicative language teaching, including balanced use of all 4 domains.
- Knowledge of the processes involved in second language acquisition and in learning content through a second language
- Ability to integrate technology, career readiness, and civics into classroom instruction
- Ability to design and implement daily classroom assessment
- Strong proficiency in the use of technologies, both hardware (e.g. projector, Smartboards, smart TVs) and technology-assisted teaching and learning software (i.e. learning management systems, language learning software, and videoconferencing applications)
- Knowledge of various disabilities and how to support adult students with disabilities in a classroom setting
- Familiar with culturally sustaining pedagogy
- Experience working with students from a range of literacy backgrounds
- Ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Ability to motivate learners
Qualifications
- Must possess Connecticut Adult Education Certification #088 Teaching English to Non-English-Speaking Adults. (Provisional applicants may be considered.)
- Minimum one year of previous ESL teaching experience is required
- Excellent computer skills
