POSITION: TEMPORARY Student Engagement Specialist until June 30, 2025
LOCATION: Weaver High School
REPORTS TO: Assistant Director of Student Engagement and Behavioral Support (Primary)/Principal (Secondary)
PRIMARY FUNCTIONS: The Student Engagement Specialist will engage in outreach, provide support and follow-up to students, assisting them and their families in resolving issues (attendance/tardiness/truancy) that impede successful grade completion. The ultimate goal is to help students succeed academically and socially. The role of the Student Engagement Specialist is to collaborate with school-based attendance team, support staff and community-based agencies to:
- Reengage students who are disengaged and disconnected from school
- Enhance engagement of students who are at risk of becoming disengaged and disconnected from school
- Improve the educational experience of students who are disengaged and disconnected
- Improve learning outcomes of students who are disengaged and disconnected
- Improve the climate and culture of the school
- Provide services and resources that reduce risk of disengagement
This is a Temporary Position until June 30, 2025.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Ensure the Hartford Public Schools’ attendance policy and procedures are consistently carried out throughout the district
- Work collaboratively with community-based agencies in support of prevention and attendance efforts
- Collaborate with Family and Community Support Services Provider to ensure parent participation in prevention efforts
- Ensure the documentation, record keeping, and procedures are complete, maintained appropriately, and comply with school system requirements
- Support school attendance teams at assigned schools
- Conduct home visits as necessary
- Provide ongoing professional learning of mentors to enhance student engagement and Student Assistance Teams (SAT)
- Provide guidance and support to school-based staff on Trauma-Informed Restorative Approaches, Practices and Environments (training provided after hire)
- Provide guidance to school-based staff related to supportive, non-judgmental adult-student interactions and verbal de-escalation techniques (training provided after hire)
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Services, Education or related field, preferred or Associates Degree and 4-6 years’ experience in related field, required
- Knowledge of and ability to use computer operation for attendance data (SWISS, PowerSchool, etc.)
- Excellent interpersonal skills and at least two years’ experience in a working environment engaging at risk youth
- Demonstrated experience in prevention/intervention work desired
- Ability to work with individuals, small groups, and in a team approach
- Ability to work independently, multi-task, and problem solve
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple, changing priorities
- Bilingual ability preferred
- Must have current driver’s license and daily use of an insured vehicle (proof required)
- Ability to work under stress and difficult time constraints
- Thorough knowledge of the Hartford community required
- Strong computer application skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office, i.e. Word, Excel, Power Point, Access and Publisher
- Availability to work an extended day, flexible hours including evenings and weekends to meet set goals

SALARY AND TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Eleven-month work year. Salary in accordance with Collective Bargaining Agreement for Hartford Educational Support Personnel (HESP) Salary Grid B-481 ($47,740-56,619) 2024-2025. This is a Temporary Position until June 30, 2025.
