What are the responsibilities and job description for the Camp Nurse position at Hartford's Camp Courant?
The Camp Nurse's role is to plan, direct, manage and supervise the health services for Hartford’s Camp Courant campers. The Nurse will make referrals to other physical and mental health care providers, if necessary, and will comply with State of Connecticut Department of Health and Human Services regulations pertaining to day camps.
Responsibilities
· In collaboration with the Camp Director and Executive Director & CEO, annually review and amend Camp emergency plan to ensure safety of all campers and staff;
· In collaboration with the Camp Physician, annually review Camp’s ‘Standing Orders’ and make any changes as necessary;
· Effectively supervise and evaluate all camp health services, and make recommendations for improvements as needed;
· Deliver direct health care daily, and emergency care as necessary, to campers, staff and visitors;
· Review all camper health care forms for special medication needs and alert Unit Directors to any special conditions of staff or campers in their care;
· Dispense campers medication as directed by his/her physician;
· Notify parents or guardians if a child has to be sent home from Camp due to injury or illness;
· Make referrals for Campers to other physical/mental health care providers, if necessary;
· Train and supervise necessary staff to administer medications in case of emergency (over the counter medications, EpiPens, blood glucose tests, etc.);
· Take inventory of over the counter medications for the infirmary, and order medications as necessary to comply with the Camp Physician’s standing orders;
· Complete daily assessment of infirmary for safety precautions;
· Maintain daily log book of treatments, and review weekly with the Camp Physician;
· Attend any additional staff trainings and meetings as necessary;
· Work in collaboration with state health and family agencies when necessary;
· Provide year-end report to the Camp Director no later than one week after the last day of Camp;
· Perform a variety of additional duties as deemed necessary to achieve the goals of Hartford’s Camp Courant.
Qualifications
· Registered Nurse (RN), with current active or active temporary Connecticut Registration is required, as is First Aid/CPR/AED certification for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers.
Skills Required
· Three (3) to five (5) years clinical experience, preferably in pediatrics;
· Proven success of working in a health care setting, preferably a pediatric clinic, hospital, school or camp;
· Ability to work outdoors for an extended period of time;
· Outstanding planning and organizational skills;
· Demonstrated ability to train groups and individuals;
· Excellent interpersonal communication;
· Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to communicate effectively with persons of diverse backgrounds;
