Description
Under general supervision, provides instructional support to faculty and students in an arts and/or media studies instructional lab or studio environment; oversees day-to-day activities, ensuring a safe lab/studio environment, including safe operations of equipment and work processes and the safe mixing, use, storage and disposal of hazardous chemicals; orders and maintains inventory of materials and supplies; and performs related duties as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
The Lab Technician, Arts is distinguished from other Lab Technicians by having responsibility for lab/studio support of art, fine arts, and media studies programs including photography, ceramics, painting and other arts and media classes. Work typically involves the mixing, storage and disposal of hazardous chemicals. Duties must be carried out in strict compliance with all regulatory and safety requirements.
Examples of Duties
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
• Plans, prepares and sets up materials and equipment for assigned classes, lab activities, demonstrations, and set up for exams; oversees and participates in storage management and distribution of a variety of specialized hand tools, power tools and equipment including those used for ceramics, woodworking and fine arts; maintains accurate records of tools and equipment loaned to students and faculty.• Provides equipment list and checks in student lockers; orients students and faculty on lab/studio safety procedures including usage of equipment and tools, hazardous materials and associated cleanup and disposal procedures and protocols; demonstrates and trains students on work methods, uses, and operations of hand and power tools and equipment; responds to student questions regarding usage, procedures and requirements; advises and provides feedback to students and faculty on proper equipment/tool use and work methods.• Maintains inventory of and researches equipment and supply options for labs/studios; participates in obtaining quotes for the procurement of consumables, materials and supplies including chemicals, glazes and other materials and supplies to meet lab/studio needs; may purchase and pick up local supplies.• Ensures labs/studios are open and ready for use during scheduled hours and that equipment is in sound working order; maintains a clean, safe and orderly learning environment and the safe storage and disposal of hazardous chemicals, biological materials and other substances in accordance with all regulatory and safety requirements.• Assists management with coordination and scheduling of labs.• Operates a variety of equipment and instruments related to the specialized area of assignment; inspects and maintains lab/studio equipment to ensure safe and proper operation; calibrates, adjusts, maintains, inspects and performs routine equipment maintenance and minor repairs; reports and coordinates major repairs and maintenance.• Acts as liaison with Information Technology regarding information system issues and computer applications used in lab(s)/studio(s); provides recommendations on the acquisition and access to software, printing equipment, and audio-visual technology used for instructional purposes.• Assists with recruiting and hiring student-employees; assists with training program staff and student-employees; assigns, schedules and monitors student-employee work for completeness, accuracy and conformance with college, department and program legal requirements and standards.• Prepares and maintains various records and reports related to lab/studio operations and activities as required, including inventory, damage and repair reports and safety and use records; participates in maintaining and updating lab and equipment standard operating procedures (SOPs).• Maintains a safe, orderly, and secure workplace in the labs, studios, and tool rooms; contacts appropriate personnel to maintain or dispose of hazardous substances and biological materials according to established procedures; maintains and tests safety cabinet(s), equipment and supplies including eyewash and safety showers; maintains safety data sheets and reports; coordinates with support personnel for inspections.• Assists management, faculty, and program support staff for assigned area(s) with outreach events, open houses and developing and implementing student art shows and fundraising events; assists with the display of art and media.• Attends conferences and trainings.• Performs other related duties as assigned.
Other Functions as Assigned:
• When assigned to an art studio that may include ceramics, sculpture, painting and drawing: oversees and maintains various related learning environments; oversees the studio/laboratory areas and performs preventive maintenance and repair of equipment related to the studio, such as kilns, and sculpting tools; assists students with activities in studio art classes and individual artistic processes.• When assigned to a photography laboratory, darkroom and other media studies studios, oversees and maintains different learning environments; calibrates, adjusts and performs preventive maintenance and repairs on 3D printing, laboratory, darkroom, studio lighting and/or computerized digital printing equipment.• When assigned to a musical studio, oversees and maintains instruments and audio recording equipment; assists with maintaining and lending sheet music and visual libraries.
Typical Qualifications
Knowledge of:
• Principles, practices, procedures and equipment of assigned lab(s)/studio(s).• Usage and operations of current and emerging instructional technologies and associated equipment, tools and materials applicable to assigned subject(s).• Current regulations and laws pertaining to regulated substances and chemical wastes.• Proper safety techniques and precautions in the use and disposal of hazardous materials.• Operation, calibration, maintenance and repair of common and specialized equipment and instruments.• Math at a level applicable to area(s) of assignment.• Practices of effective inventory management and District purchasing processes.• Safety policies and safe work practices applicable to the work being performed.• Federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and court decisions governing area(s) of assignment including Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and OSHA rules and regulations applicable to lab storage safety.
Skills and Abilities to:
• Oversee the operations of assigned labs, studios, and tool rooms including preparing and issuing materials, instruments and equipment needed by students and faculty.• Provide technical support to faculty in planning, organizing, and preparing classroom and lab demonstrations and materials.• Provide guidance to faculty and students on the safe and proper use of course materials and equipment.• Analyze problems, evaluate alternatives, and recommend effective courses of action to management.• Maintain and repair department tools, materials and equipment; maintain accurate inventory, maintenance and safety records.• Assign and review the work of students engaged in lab operations; demonstrate, inspect, enforce and monitor safe work practices and safety compliance in a lab environment using hazardous chemicals.• Read and understand manuals, specifications, schematic drawings and parts catalogs.• Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.• Operate a computer and use standard business software.• Exercise tact and diplomacy in dealing with sensitive, complex and confidential student issues and situations.• Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties.• Demonstrate an understanding of, sensitivity to, and appreciation for the academic, ethnic, socio-economic, disability and gender diversity of students and staff attending or working on a community college campus.
Supplemental Information
• An associate degree and three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience providing instructional or tutorial assistance to students in the assigned subject-matter area or three years of related work experience in the assigned subject area;• or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:Regular, full-time, 12 months per year classified position on Main Campus. Weekly Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00 am -5:00 pm. The starting salary is $4,872/month (Step A). Salary range 26 on CSEA salary schedule: $4,872 to $5,922) monthly(5 Steps); District provides health benefits, which currently consist of full medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees and a high percentage of coverage for eligible dependents. District-paid life, accident, and income protection insurance is provided for the employee only. Must become a Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS) member.
