THE DEPARTMENT
The Counseling Program at Hartnell College comprises full and part-time counselors who perform a broad array of counseling and advising for students including, but not limited to, academic advisement, transfer preparation, educational planning, career counseling, career development services, job readiness preparation, and personal counseling. Counseling operates in the day, evening, and on weekends, and at three campus sites, as well as some off campus locations, and operates outside the normal academic year.
THE POSITION
Under the general direction of the area dean or appropriate administrator, the counselor will provide direct counseling and support services to the general student population, provide guidance, workshops, assists students in making decisions and plans relevant to their educational, career, personal, and social needs and goals, assist in the assessment of students in relation to their goals, and provide interpretation of placement results. The counselor will participate in the implementation of district-wide student success plans as they relate to admissions, placement, orientation, counseling, and follow-up components, and will refer students to appropriate campus and community resources and services. This assignment may include teaching and/or counseling at any of the college's campus sites, day, evening, or weekend classes or services, large lectures, lab classes, and distance learning, and using multiple teaching methodologies.
Examples of Duties
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
• Offer student guidance and assistance;
• Assist in the growth and success of a diverse population of students through careful preparation of course and program materials, effective teaching and counseling methodologies, and informed critical feedback on assignments and discussion;
• Keep students informed about their education progress through the prompt evaluation of their educational plans.
• Assist students in defining educational goals and developing educational plans;
• Participate in program and curriculum review and development;
• Develop and assess student learning and program-level outcomes;
• Utilize the results of student area outcomes assessment to make improvements in counseling services;
• Post and maintain office hours and counseling schedule;
• Participate in student recruitment and articulation programs; plan, organize, coordinate, and implement a broad range of counseling activities;
• Serve as liaison with academic divisions, departments, or special areas;
• Participate in campus efforts to identify and remove barriers to retention and transfer;
• Develop and implement program planning and assessment for the area;
• Participate in faculty recruitment and peer evaluation;
• Collegially participate in department, college, and discipline-specific activities;
• Participate in assignments and activities that support accreditation, institutional planning, and institutional effectiveness;
• Participate in college governance, including serving on various committees;
• Participate in local, state, regional, and national professional activities and organizations;
• Attend faculty meetings, college assemblies, professional development and orientation activities, and other meetings as called by the dean, vice president, superintendent/president, or designee;

Supplemental Information
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Master's in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling
OR bachelor's degree in one of the above listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT)
OR the equivalent.

Preference may be given to candidates with prior teaching and/or counseling experience at the community college level.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT;Full-time, tenure track Counselor faculty position.The starting faculty salary range is $74,643.00 to $157,676.00 annually based on 185 days per academic year. The successful candidate's starting salary will be based on verified education and teaching experience.The district provides health benefits, which currently consist of full coverage for medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees and a high percentage of coverage for eligible dependents. The employee assistance program provides basic life insurance for employees only. STRS (state teacher retirement system).Application Procedure

Hiring & Selection ProcessA select group of candidates will be invited to participate in the first round of interviews, which will take place on the Hartnell College campus in Salinas, CA. The first round will involve a panel interview with faculty, staff, and the Dean. During this round, candidates will be asked to deliver a teaching demonstration on a topic that will be provided upon receipt of the interview invitation. Additionally, candidates will respond to a series of scripted questions. These questions will be made available for review 30 minutes before the interview. We anticipate conducting the first-round interviews during the first three weeks of April 2025.Candidates selected for the second round of interviews will meet with the college president and vice president. This round may also include a 50-minute teaching demonstration delivered to a group of Hartnell College students. The second-round interviews are expected to occur in the last week of April or early May.The final decision regarding the outcome of the interview process will be made in mid-May.
