THE DEPARTMENT

 

The Chemistry Program is designed to meet the needs of the diverse community of interest served by the community college. A full program of chemistry for the aspiring professional scientist is offered through two-semester courses in general chemistry and organic chemistry. A separate track is offered for nursing students that includes a one-year sequence in general inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, and biochemistry. The Chemistry Department has a strong commitment to the student with little or no prior chemistry background. The entire program is taught with a strong laboratory emphasis. In the advanced classes, students receive hands-on experience with a wide variety of instruments. The chemistry faculty work collaboratively with their science colleagues and their colleagues in the nursing and allied health programs to foster student success. Hartnell's STEM programs have been awarded multiple Title V, NSF, NASA, and private grants. Through these grants, Hartnell has provided students opportunities for improved academic success, undergraduate research experience, and internships.

 

THE POSITION

 

Under the general direction of the area dean, the chemistry instructor will be responsible for providing instruction in all chemistry courses. This assignment may include teaching at any of the college's campus sites, day, evening, or weekend classes, large lectures, lab classes, distance learning, and multiple teaching methodologies.

 

This position is expected to teach in-person classes at Hartnell College's main campus in Salinas and other centers. Teaching assignments may also include online classes.

 

Examples of Duties

 

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

 

• Coordinate, plan, organize, and instruct lecture and lab courses as assigned, including collaborative and team teaching;

• Coordinate, plan, prepare, present, evaluate, and deliver classroom instruction and related activities, including developing and revising curriculum; using computer and advanced technologies in instruction; and maintaining currency in the field;

• Offer student advising and assistance;

• Assist in the growth and success of a diverse population of students through careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methodologies, and informed critical feedback on assignments and discussion;

• Develop and file appropriate syllabi for each course taught, ensuring that each syllabus conforms to required and approved curriculum, has appropriate content and pedagogy, and reflects currency in the field;

• Recommend textbooks and other instructional materials, including classroom and laboratory equipment, to the dean;

• Keep students informed about their progress through the prompt evaluation and grading of papers and other work;

• Maintain and report accurate and complete scholastic records, including attendance records;

• Participate in program and curriculum review and development;

• Develop and assess student learning and program-level outcomes;

• Utilize the results of student learning outcomes assessment to make improvements in teaching and learning;

• Post and maintain office hours for student consultations;

• Participate in student recruitment and articulation programs;

• Participate in faculty recruitment and peer evaluation;

• Collegially participate in department, college, and discipline-specific activities;

• Participate in assignments and activities that support accreditation, institutional planning, and institutional effectiveness;

• Participate in college governance, including serving on various committees;

• Participate in local, state, regional, and national professional activities and organizations;

• Engages in professional development activities that lead to continuous quality improvement of one's knowledge, skills, and abilities as it pertains to effective performance of the job functions.

• Supports partnerships and collaborative projects with 4-year institutions and industry employers to support student access to internships, summer bridge activities, and career exploration opportunities.

• Attend faculty meetings, college assemblies, professional development and orientation activities, and other meetings as called by the dean, vice president, superintendent/president, or designee.

 

Typical Qualifications

 

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a depth of knowledge in the discipline and broad preparation for teaching in the discipline. In addition, the successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE;

 

Master's in chemistry

 

OR Bachelor's in chemistry or biochemistry AND Master's in biochemistry, chemical engineering, chemical physics, physics, molecular biology or geochemistry

 

OR the equivalent.

Preference may be given to candidates with prior teaching experience at the community college level.

 

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT;

Full-time, tenure-track Chemistry faculty position.

 

The starting faculty salary range is $70,608.00 to $149,154.00 annually based on 175 days per academic year. The successful candidate's starting salary will be based on verified education and teaching experience.

 

The district provides health benefits, which currently consist of full coverage for medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees and a high percentage of coverage for eligible dependents. The employee assistance program provides basic life insurance for employees only. STRS (state teacher retirement system).

Hiring & Selection ProcessA select group of candidates will be invited to participate in the first round of interviews, which will take place on the Hartnell College campus in Salinas, CA. The first round will involve a panel interview with faculty, staff, and the Dean. During this round, candidates will be asked to deliver a teaching demonstration on a topic that will be provided upon receipt of the interview invitation. Additionally, candidates will respond to a series of scripted questions. These questions will be made available for review 30 minutes before the interview. We anticipate conducting the first-round interviews during the first three weeks of April 2025.Candidates selected for the second round of interviews will meet with the college president and vice president. This round may also include a 50-minute teaching demonstration delivered to a group of Hartnell College students. The second-round interviews are expected to occur in the last week of April or early May.The final decision regarding the outcome of the interview process will be made in mid-May. Hartnell College is one of the oldest institutions of higher education in California. Founded in 1920 as Salinas Junior College, the school was renamed Hartnell College in 1948, and the Hartnell Community College District was established the following year. The College is preparing to join with its students, employees, alums and the greater community to celebrate its Centennial, beginning in Fall 2019. Hartnell moved into a new building on its current 54-acre site, at 411 Central Ave. in Salinas in 1936. The Main Campus is located in Monterey County, just a 25-minute drive from the scenic Monterey Peninsula and the Monterey Regional Airport. Its Alisal Campus in east Salinas, opened in 2014, houses its Agricultural Business and Technology Institute, its Sustainable Design and Construction Center, a diesel program, an automotive technology program and its computer science program. Hartnell also holds classes at its education center in King City, opened in 2002, and at numerous off-campus locations in north and south Monterey County. Thanks to a $167 million local bond measure – known as Measure T – approved by district voters in 2016, it is preparing to expand that facility and open new centers in Soledad and Castroville, as well as a new state-of-the-art building for its nursing and allied health programs on the Main Campus. Along with renovation of two classroom buildings and new landscaping, also on the Main Campus, those projects are scheduled for completion by 2021. The College serves the Salinas Valley, a fertile agricultural region some 10 miles wide and 100 miles long, as well as part of southern San Benito County. It draws most of its annual enrollment of 17,000 students from Salinas and the communities of Bradley, Castroville, Chualar, Gonzales, Greenfield, Jolon, King City, Lockwood, Moss Landing, San Ardo, San Lucas and Soledad. Students also come from Monterey Peninsula communities and elsewhere in California’s Central Coast, as well as from other states and countries.
