The EdRedesign Lab at Harvard Graduate School of Education: Founded in 2014 by Paul Reville, Francis Keppel Professor of Practice of Educational Policy and Administration at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, EdRedesign provides catalytic support to the cradle-to-career place-based partnership field to drive systems-level change and open personalized pathways to well-being, educational attainment, civic engagement, and upward mobility. To support this growing field to effect transformational change that serves the needs and talents of individual children and youth, our work focuses on talent development, actionable research, our Institute for Success Planning, and our By All Means initiatives. Our mission is to ensure the social, emotional, physical, and academic development and well-being of all children and youth, especially those affected by racism, pov erty, and disinvestment.

Reporting to EdRedesign’s Deputy Director and Director of the Institute for Success Planning, the Director of Education Strategy and Cross-sector Community Impact will serve as a member of the EdRedesign Leadership Team and oversee the day-to-day operations of EdRedesign’s Institute for Success Planning community of practice, learning community, alumni development programming, and related initiatives.

Position Description

Specifically, the Director of Education Strategy and Cross-Sector Community Impact will:


  • Lead the implementation of the day-to-day programming and operations of EdRedesign’s Institute for Success Planning Community of Practice
  • Develop learning and capacity-building opportunities that expose cross-sector leaders in partner communities to exemplary place-based cross-sector models and approaches to personalized relationship-based supports and opportunities for young people and families to accelerate progress toward positive outcomes
  • Under the guidance of the Director of the Institute for Success Planning, spearhead the design of the community of practice curriculum, session design, learning materials, monthly virtual sessions, and annual in-person convenings
  • Supervise the Institute for Success Planning’s Senior Program Coordinator, program staff, support staff, and student interns.
  • Coordinate all logistical aspects of the Institute for Success Planning Community of Practice selection process, including recruiting communities, marketing to national intermediaries, and overseeing the selection processes
  • Manage all administrative aspects of the Institute for Success Planning Community of Practice with support from staff, including overseeing all event planning; overseeing the administration of travel and accommodations for community partners; and acting as onsite lead for in-person convenings
  • Continue to build on the Institute for Success Planning’s existing storytelling efforts to support local communities in effectively communicating their stories of positive impact (toolkit, resources, coaching, curriculum etc.). Support broader storytelling activities and efforts within EdRedesign.
  • Partner with the Institute for Success Planning Director to coordinate the provision of EdRedesign’s catalytic supports for partner communities that include coaching, data and measurement support, documenting success stories, and facilitating cross-pollination within the Institute for Success Planning community of practice network
  • Partner closely with staff across EdRedesign’s functions (research, communications, finance and operations) and signature programs (EdRedesign Fellowship for Cradle-to-Career Partnership Leaders, By All Means Senior Fellows, etc.) to amplify the impact of the Institute for Success Planning and share best practices
  • Work in close partnership with EdRedesign’s Deputy Director to develop programming to support the Institute for Success Planning’s new alumni network
  • Collaborate with and develop relationships with national partners to accelerate the impact of the Institute for Success Planning
  • Collaborate with University partners across a range of Harvard schools, centers, initiatives, and disciplines, supporting the integration of EdRedesign’s Institute for Success Planning into other relevant efforts across the University
  • Represent the needs and interests of EdRedesign’s Institute for Success Planning in major national initiatives and public events, including presenting and facilitating at relevant conferences and convenings
  • Support EdRedesign’s senior leadership team to secure grant and gift funding, including co-authoring grant proposals and reports and meeting with current and prospective funders as needed
  • Support EdRedesign’s emerging youth engagement and pathways programming

This is a one-year term position with possibility of renewal based on department needs and funding.

Basic Qualifications


  • Master’s degree or equivalent
  • A minimum of 10 years of related educational and social impact leadership
  • Previous experience with public speaking and session facilitation
  • Ability to travel to partner communities and attend national field-building events

This is a one-year term position with possibility of renewal based on department needs and funding.

Additional Qualifications And Skills


  • PhD or Ed.LD preferred
  • Strong oral, written, and interpersonal skills and the ability to represent EdRedesign, the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and Harvard University professionally both internally and externally
  • Experience working with multiple constituencies including community-based non-profit organizations, philanthropies and major donors, academic partners, and for-profit businesses
  • Ability to work with a team effectively across different projects and work streams
  • Ability to work independently, analyze problems, and develop practical solutions

Working Conditions

EdRedesign is a hybrid work environment with some staff working in the office at least part of each work week while other staff are primarily remote. The Director may opt for either work arrangement in consultation with their hiring manager. The ability to be remote may change based on department or school needs/requirements.

HGSE is currently developing dynamic workplace models which will actively support a combination of on-campus and remote work (within a state in which Harvard is registered to do business) where business and operational needs allow. You and your manager will discuss the best schedule based on your role and operational need. Work Format Details

Any remote work must be performed within one of the Harvard Registered Payroll States, which currently includes Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Washington, and California (CA for exempt positions only).
