Basic Qualifications

  • BA in Economics, Business Administration, Information Science, Statistics, or other relevant disciplines with emphasis on quantitative / statistical methods.
  • 3 or more years of experience in the application of quantitative methods to social science and / or legal data or an equivalent combination of graduate education and experience.

Additional Qualifications and Skills

We are looking for people who have :

  • Advanced knowledge of Stata and R, is required.
  • Experience in text mining, web scraping, and content analysis is highly desirable.
  • Ability to work independently and creatively.
  • High standards in terms of quality of work, attention to detail, and strong organizational skills.
  • Willingness to learn new methods, and strong commitment to timely task completion.
  • Ability to balance multiple tasks and shift priorities under tight deadlines.
  • Ability to create clear and structured documentation for code, data processes, and analytical methods to support transparency and reproducibility.

    This is a one-year term appointment with potential for renewal subject to funding and departmental need.

    Position Description

    As an Applied Research Statistician, you will :

  • Assist with procuring data sets and setting up data for use with statistical packages (Stata and R)
  • Investigate, analyze, and interpret data using linear and nonlinear statistical models.
  • Prepare clear and concise written summaries with tables and graphs that demonstrate key findings.
  • Formulate research designs and suggest ways to improve designs by identifying potential problems, and recommending and implementing solutions.
  • Assist in designing and implementing surveys through Qualtrics and Mturk.
  • Develop resource guides leading to data sets and other resources in empirical research.
  • Aid in the selection of statistical software and providing training on the selected packages.
  • Review draft papers for replicability and the appropriate use of statistical methods.
  • Ensure that data handling complies with Harvard's data privacy standards.
  • Conduct replication studies to ensure accuracy and reliability.

    Job Summary

    Harvard Law School (HLS) is hiring an Applied Research Statistician to consult with and provide empirical research support for HLS faculty, primarily, and for other members of the HLS community.

    Successful applicants will be comfortable in an environment that requires a high level of independence and intellectual curiosity. Under the general direction of HLS faculty and the Director of Empirical Services, the Applied Research Statistician will develop, design, and conduct empirical research projects; gather, edit and analyze quantitative datasets; conduct background research; design new databases, online surveys and conduct experiments.
