The Harvard School of Dental Medicine Office of Dental Education is seeking applications for the position of Assistant Dean for Advanced Graduate Education. This is a full-time faculty appointment at the academic rank of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor in the appropriate academic department based on the successful candidate's area of expertise. Academic rank and salary will be commensurate with education, experience, and qualifications. HSDM offers a unique interdisciplinary environment for teaching, research, service, and clinical activity, central to our mission at HSDM and the University. They will engage in preclinical, clinical, and didactic teaching, and also may serve as directors for advanced graduate education courses. Additional responsibilities include committee service, research, and / or other administrative duties. Assignment of these responsibilities is based on individual interests, the unique abilities of the individual, and the needs of the School.

The successful applicant will oversee all aspects of Advanced Graduate Education (AGE) at Harvard School of Dental Medicine and will report directly to the Dean of Dental Education. The Office of Dental Education (ODE) oversees all educational programs within the School, including predoctoral education, advanced graduate education, and continuing education. The Office provides opportunities for learning, leadership development, and research by providing a high level of support and service. ODE also coordinates orientation, commencement, and a wide range of activities related to student life. The members of the Office of Dental Education are committed to supporting and assisting students as they progress through their programs at HSDM. HSDM offers a unique interdisciplinary environment for teaching, research, and clinical activity.

Responsibilities include coordination and collaboration with Advanced Graduate Program directors to maintain high standards and compliance with required procedures and processes and for attracting high-quality student and researchers. In addition, the incumbent will provide general operational services to both Advanced Graduate Education programs, including accredited and non-accredited programs, and the Office of Dental Education (ODE) overall. In addition to meeting the expectations of the academic department, the core administrative responsibilities include the following :

  • AGE Admissions : recruitment, candidate selection, admission review, onboarding requirements
  • Chair the Committee on Advanced Graduate Education (CAGE)
  • Review and approve student petitions, such as degree changes and Leave of Absence requests
  • Guide and oversee AGE academic and professionalism & ethics related student disciplinary cases
  • Oversee the Promotion of Advanced Graduate Students
  • AGE Student Affairs : mentorship, guidance and support for students
  • Identify and support students who are not making satisfactory progress academically and / or clinically
  • Oversight of research and degree requirements / framework for DMSc / MMSc candidates, working with Office of Research
  • Approval of oral qualifying exam committee
  • Review and manage the Oral Biology courses and Core Curriculum
  • Oral biology course evaluations & review and support for course directors
  • Review and approve new courses
  • Oversee AGE orientation & new AGE student onboarding / credentialing with Clinical Affairs
  • Provide clinical evaluation of AGE students and faculty
  • Oversee the graduation clearance and completion of the degree / certificate
  • Responsible for program change and progress reports to CODA
  • Annual CODA reports / surveys for each program and non-accredited programs
  • CODA site visit preparation : oversees the AGE CODA self-study process and site visit
  • Oversee Affiliation Agreements for affiliated AGE programs and externship sites
  • Support and guide the AGE program directors
  • Host an annual calibration retreat for AGE programs
  • Oversee the onboarding of new program directors
  • Works closely with the Office of Dental Education
  • Provide supervision to the AGE staff coordinator

Basic Qualifications

Must possess a DMD or DDS degree or equivalent from an accredited dental school. Minimum of 8 years of leadership experience in a dental and / or healthcare environment, including experience managing a team.

Additional Qualifications

Masters, doctorate / DMSc or additional degree strongly preferred. Eligible for full dental licensure in Massachusetts, board certification in a dental specialty, and experience with student affairs and grievance processes desired. Incumbent should hold a strong understanding of residency programs in the United States, including application processes and requirements, general programmatic requirements, and board certification processes. Basic understanding or willingness to develop of organizational processes and structure of the office of dental education. Clinician scientist with experience in student and resident research programs.
