Job Summary
MCB Graphics is a unique departmental service center facility that provides graphic support to the entire scientific community at Harvard. The facility offers layout and design, illustration, printing as well as photography services. Reporting to the Director of Scientific Graphics and Communications, the Graphics Assistant will assist with the operational and administrative needs of MCB Graphics and work with faculty, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, undergraduate students and staff.
Position Description
The Graphics Assistant will operate and manage large-scale printers so that documents of all different file formats and dimensions are correctly produced; troubleshoot a full spectrum of problems; provide information regarding design; and work closely with the Director to create a full range of drawings from simple stock art pieces to complex multi-panel scientific models according to specs. These will be used in scientific journals, slide presentations, talks, poster presentations, and books. Will also create scientific drawings to be used as training material in courses taught to scientists.
The Graphics Assistant will be responsible for administrative support, including supply ordering, bookkeeping, payment and reconciliation of invoices and purchase card and will perform all other job-related duties as required.
Basic Qualifications
A minimum of an Associate degree in illustration, graphic arts or equivalent.
Additional Qualifications and Skills
- Extensive background in illustration or graphic arts with three or more years of experience preferred.
- Strong computer knowledge of MACs. Must have a desire to keep current with constant software updates of all the programs we support, including Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Acrobat and PowerPoint.
- Excellent interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills.
- Must be detail and service oriented. Perform well under pressure and tight deadlines.
- The artistic portfolio reflecting full range of capabilities will be requested.
Working Conditions
- This position requires an on-campus presence in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Due to the client-facing nature of the role, remote work is not possible.
