Job Summary
We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Counselor to join our team at Beacon Academy. Current Residents in Counseling, Licensed Professional Counselors, or School Counselors are required for this position.
Responsibilities
- Guide school staff on behavior supports and de-escalation strategies to support mental health needs and alignment with ethical practices
- Lead during de-escalation events
- Document any serious event such as a restraint or event resulting in injury
- Be a knowledge base for community resources to support students and families, including collaborating with stakeholders and collateral providers
- Liaison and support for any mandated reporting
- Provide therapeutic interventions in a school setting
- Attend all necessary school meetings (IEP, behavioral conferences, truancy) and collaborate with administration and faculty
- Make appropriate referrals to outside agencies when needed
- Assess suicidal and homicidal ideations and execute referral processes including communication with student and guardian
- Maintain records of interventions provided
- Monitor student progress via observation or data collection
- Collaborate with administrative staff to create supports for student growth
- Plan and implement therapeutic small groups
- Model positive school culture, mission, and vision
- Provide individual or classroom intervention with students as needed
- Support students in management of goal setting, academic and transition planning
- Provide prevention programs or interventions to students experiencing crises
- Participate as part of the school leadership team
- Utilize available data to provide regular reporting to school stakeholders
- Be an agent within the school for inclusion, equity, and access
Knowledge:
- Knowledge of mental disorders of childhood and adolescence and related treatment and behavior management techniques
- Knowledge of the rules and regulations for mental health programs in Virginia
- Knowledge of national counseling guidelines and regulations
- Knowledge of ethical considerations and HIPPA guidelines
Skills and Abilities:
- Must have strong counseling skills, interpersonal skills, leadership skills, observation and documentation skills
- Must be able to work school schedule, some later afternoons during the school year, daytime during the summer (if applicable), and some holidays
- Must have a valid driver’s license
- Must be willing to participate in meetings and trainings, including first aid, CPR, and Safety Care
